Charging for lake access...
« on: Jan 21, 2010, 04:40 PM »
Heard the professional pumpkinseed fisherman are getting into them pretty good at Paquettes bay, in north hero now. So I went to go check it out, seems the only access to the bay is through the holiday harbor hotel ramp, wich is charging $5.00, so I went to another spot instead. Having to pay $5  just rubs me the wrong way, maybe its just me.

Agreed. You have to pay some to use the ramp in west swanton, but seeing the guy out there plowing roads for everyone to all the shanties takes the edge off it.

Having to pay for access to the lake sucks  >:(
$150 for season pass to launch at Apple Island in the summer.
Wish there was more public access.

They have to maintain the ramp pay property taxes and he plows roads out on the ice
and marks most of the bad spots in the Ice.They need to make a living just like the rest
of us.I paid the $5 and cashed in for $97.80 so it was well worth it.

we stayed at Holiday Harbor last year ,the ramp is good the road is plowed and the info on where to go is important if your coming a long distance. I agree it's worth it and he has the right to charge 'it's his property. Alot of people would complain if he refused entry and granted it only t customers.
If your going to go out with the boys,You better get up with the men.

Read an FLW article where an editor went over to fish in japan with the guy who caught the  potential record tying bass. they have to pay $30 at least in highway toll fees, $30 minimum in lake acsess and more to store their boat at the launch (their is no other option).  I guess 5 bucks isnt terrible considering what those guys have to go through

I gladly thank Bruce @ Holiday Harbor everytime I hand him the access fee for allowing me the opportunity to use his land to indulge in my recreation ! Hell I wish we had to pay for ALL VT lake access if we could get boat accesses as nice as the ones in New York ! If you compare NY's accesses to VT's it's like comparing a mansions to an outhouses !

I agree with motarfish. The guy provides a good access. Besides he pays property tax, insurance, and maintenance cost. Besides we fished there today and I caught a nice 40 inch norther. my biggest so far. 5 dollars seems reasonable

Could be a "good" thing too.  In NY if you charge people to hunt or fish you are also liable for anything that happens to them.  Break your leg and they pay.

Unfortunately that also applies to Vt.  I would hope anyone using someones private property for access wouldn't stoop to sueing a land owner if they injured themselves while being granted that privilege....

Question about this. We are going up in March and would like to fish there. Stayed with Bruce last year and loved it, would stay again but we found a place that would let us keep the dog as well. We still get our bait there when we go up. Is it 5.00 per party for access or 5.00 per person? We have 8-10 people and that would be a lot of money for access. I have no problem with the 5.00 fee though cause I'm sure the ramp maintainence and plowing isn't cheap but if it's per fisherman thats quite a bit.
Thanks!

Thanks Mr. Bibit! Thats an ok price with me I'll have to see if I can just park out of the way there or just on the ice. Have never been very comfy with my vehicle on the ice, though I guess lots of people do.

Cozy Cottages @ Hislop's Landing. Only 25 extra for the dog. I think they have a couple for rent in the winter months. Were going the first weekend in March, I'll let you know how it pans out

I did not weigh that Pike. I caught it out deep near the blue gillers. She was a bute. Not a mark on her. Just a huge, clean, fat pike. I caught her right in the front lip and released her.

hard...pretty hard.  Last year, Bruce had an pay box that nobody put much in.  He takes care of the access and a road.  If there was a lot of snow, it would be a hard place to fish.  I wish all the bays had a guy that at least gave you access, might it be for a small fee.

Is there a charge at Apple Island in the winter. I usually fish Keeler's Bay, but haven't gotten on anything sizeable there this season (the perch are hitting crazy though) and want to try somewhere new.

The owner there hasn't assessed a fee this year that I'm aware of. Last year he was trying to get $8.00 from folks, leaving nasty notes on their vehicles, threatening to tow them away, the whole 9. I guess he kinda gave up not wanting to stand out in the cold to collect. I'm sure most people would have paid regardless of his outlook towards his potential customers despite the fact that there wasn't any winter maintenance being performed by the owner. If he ever going to try a fee in the future I think he ought to put a little more thought into how he's going to go about it and may do his customer the curticy of plowing the parking lot and ramp...

The owner of the left side of the launch is in Florida in the winter, right side is the camp grounds.  Neither is there in the winter.  ;D In the summer they charge to park in the field.
