Swivels on your setup?
« on: Jan 28, 2009, 05:58 AM »
Are you guys using snap swivels or tying straight to the lure of choice?

Just say no to snap swivels!  On tip-ups I use a quality barrel swivel to attach my main braided line to a mono leader...when jigging I tie lure directly to line. JMO

On my 6 jigging rods I run Fireline crystal micro ice in 8lb and then to a good ball bearing swivel.  I then use a 3 foot piece of 6 lb florocarbon as a leader.  Bazillion eyes have fallen to this set up.....well maybe not a bazillion but tons......

For wallys i use a barrell swivel to tie my tip up line to my mono leader, but no, i tie the mono leader directly to the treble hook so id have to say yes and no? but more no ;D

First off i hate having more terminal tackle than is needed on my rigs. i don't even use snaps on my musky leaders. however i started using a swivel on my jigging rod after watching my jig on an underwater camera. main reason is during the pause the jig ends up spinning. no matter how well you think you have your minnow hooked it is near impossible to keep the jig from rotating. it seems the fish rarely like that. i run the swivel about 12"-18" up from the jig. i feel my catch rate is better with the swivel.

I would just tie the line straight to the jig/lure. That way you don't lose any action of the lure.

I tie direct to jigs. On spoons or swimming baits i use a bull nose snap..no swivel on it. I do however run a small BB barrel swivel above my bait about 18" for line twist. Make sure its small enough to go through the guides.

a barrel swivel is a great way to do it! i get lazy and use a barrel snap sometimes but a small black one. and i do tie my barrel at least 18 inches up the line. it helps a lot when fishing raps for all the twist.

Sometimes...a swivel, a bead, a tear drop blade, a few more beads, a bobber stop, a jig.  ;D

when the right fish wants to bite, it doesn't matter

   main line, snap swivel, barrel swivel, 3 ft 10/15lb flouro, dual opposed hooks.  I always take my leader off and put it on a rig board so they are ALWAYS straight and I mainly fish big baits for big fish, even with cookies, on a tip up they don't care.

On a jig rod, there should be nothing but line to the lure/jig

I have heard that a spinning jig will spook fish. What I was told is that if you tie a rapala knot or something similar that leave a loop of line for the jig to move around on..it will help with the spinning problems. It really does, try it and put your hook in a buvket or something. No spin.

i run a swivel on my tipups between the mono and the dacron.  on my rod i run a swivel with about a 8ft leader behind it, and will replace it after it gets down to about two feet
