Ice cleats ??
« on: Sep 20, 2004, 10:16 PM »

It may be a little early, I hope to get the Lund out on the water yet this fall but what is the best kind of ice cleats ?
I was in Cabelas on Friday but was still in the camping/ hunting mode and forgot the ice cleats.

I use the standard Ice Creepers. I can't say they are the best, but they work for me. I had problems with the straps loosening up, so I made two mini bungie cords for each one to use in addition to the straps. That worked like a charm. I keep them on my boots all season, and just swap boots before and after I go fishing.

I have heard the Korkers are very good.  They are a little pricy, but they have tungsten carbide cleats in them.

If you get Korkers with laces, do yourself a favor and replace the laces with about four feet of .25 inch nylon rope.  They stay on a lot better if you tie them tight to your boot.

The Artic Spurs work great but kill your feet if you do a lot of walking (or running-------FLAG!!!).
I made the switch to YaxTrax, these things are great, you do not even know they are on your boots.  They use SS coiled wire instead of the conventional spikes.  They are supposedly based on a design that the Sherpas use instead of crampons when climbing everest?

Just screw small raised-head screws right into the lugs of your boots.  You can "stud" ATV tires the same way.

I don't even need ice cleats. With all the snow our lakes' ice get here in colorado I don't really need them. The only bad thing is druding through all that snow :pinch:
if anybody from michigan will help me out with the lakes and stuff up here I'd really appreciate it since I'm new to the area.

Here's my Cabelas Trans Alaskas studded with #8x1/2" hex head sheet metal screws. No foot fatigue, sore arches, laces, straps and you can't loose them or forget them. Just walk naturally. All for less than $3 ;D

RG - how do you like those trans alaska boots?  I'm looking for something comparable in warmth to my Mickey Mouse boots (tought to find, I know!), but without the weight.  Have been looking at the trans alaskas...   Thanks!

BEST BOOTS EVER
Never had anything on my feet on ice that were more comfortable, light or easy to walk in. Warmth is not an issue with these boots, totally waterproof, super insulation under foot, easy on, easy off. Top it off with Cabelas unconditional warranty and all I can say is,
I LOVE THESE BOOTS ;D

yes, but do you like them??  LOL!  Thanks - I thought they sounded good, but had never found anyone that has tried them.  I might have to run this one by my "Chief Financial Officer" aka Wife.

When I started a broomball team at work (we manufacture printing equipment) several years ago we had a bunch of guys who had never played before. At our first couple of games we had a guy who could fly on the ice even though he had a pair of basic boots versus the broombal shoes I wore. I asked him about it and he showed me the bottoms of his boots. He had some screws screwed in just like your picture. I had to tell him that they were illegal and to take them out before the refs found out. He ended up with zero traction with just his boots.

I do 90% of my ice fishing in tennis shoes. But those $4 Ht enterprises cheapos actually work really good. I have Arctic spurs and they work good but the HT ones work as good and very comfortable. Nikes are more comfy tho.

Mr S.,
Tennis shoes ???
You must be fishing for ice in your drinks at the bar.  Are you serious?

I know, you've got a pair of those new Nike Forced Air Heat Pumped Dave Genz shoes. ;D

I agree Seaguar you hardly know your wearing those Ht cheapos, they do a fine job until we get some snow.

I must confess. I am one of those tennis shoe wearing icefishermen ;D, unless I plan on sitting outside all day or if it's real cold and windy then I wear my Mickeys. On most days, truck fishing, sitting around in a heated shack or moving and drilling a lot in search mode.  I like to wear quality moisture wicking socks, the socks are key (dry feet=warm feet) a pair of old sneakers with good pair of pull-over rubber boots. Cheap, very light, warm  and most of all comfortable.

Here in Manitoba tennis shoes wouldn't keep your feet warm for long.  I just purchased a pair of Kamik insulated winter boots, rated at -70° (about $100US) because they were a lot lighter than my 10 yr old heavy ones with safety toes.  Those were rated at -40°, but worked fine.  I use a pair of inexpensive rubber slip-on steel cleats for first ice.  After that, snow usually covers the ice and makes walking easier.

Edited to add:  Most of my fishing is on the open ice, walking out to the spots with a tow-behind sled.

I fish in a shack much of the time. No wind so its easier to see bites and use slip bobbers. Usually I`m only 8 feet from the truck so no use putting on my Lacrosse Ice Kings. I just keep it warm in the shack and fish in tennies.

Mr S,
I understand now...I thought you were either a tough guy or just plain nuts ;D

We don't get to drive our vehicles out on the ice around here. It's just too dangerous. Boy if I could ..... ::).....I can see the old fishmobile with a tow behind shack and everything including the kitchen sink.

You know...most people move South for the winter....I may have to move Northwest.
