spooling reel
« on: Jan 12, 2010, 07:05 AM »
I have cabelas line 3# I'd like to put on my spinning reel. I've always just put the spool on the floor face up and the line spooled correctly. This spool is not the usual round. The part with the label is square the other side is round. I never spooled a reel any other way other than the label facing up can you please explain what I need to do to get the line on right.  Before this I just had 2 cheap combo's I bought already spooled. The line also keeps getting snagged on the spool this way and I dont want any kinked line that's going to break off.
How do you spool with these type of spools?
thanks

When you put line on a spinning reel, you want the label facing the spool.

If the back of the spool is facing the spool on the reel, it will get a twist in it every time you make a complete turn of the handle.

Hope this helps,

get someone to help you. i always get my mrs to help. put the spool on a pen or chopstick or something and get your helper to hold it wearing gloves or oven mitts (its gonna get hot!) and get them to keep a fair amount of tention on the spool while you reel in. it will ensure your line goes on under tention, makes a world of difference!

Thanks guy's. I was worried about not spooling it on right and getting coils.I did 1 reel so far and it's working great, no coils even with a tiny jammin jig on it.
Thanks again

Regardless of which way the label is facing, you want the line to come off of the filler spool in the same direction ( clockwise, or counter clockwise ) as the line goes on to the spool of your reel.  You do not want them going opposite directions, nor do you want to let the filler spool turn on it's axis.  Some people will put a pencil or something through the hub of the filler spool, and let the spool spin while they reel the line on to the spool of the reel.  That will cause the line to twist too.

Hope that helps.

Or... you could build yourself a little line spooler and put it on correctly without line twist ;D

RG, that looks amazing! Great work!

Came in to post this exactly. Very sound advice.

Another tip is to soak your line in warm water and to use a line treater, I personally use and recommend KVD line spray. Spray it on a rag, and when reeling your line onto your spool, let it slide through the area of the rag you sprayed. Also a spray or two once it's all on the reel.

I use the Berkley Line Spooling Station.  The line goes on consistently and under tension. No need for pencils.  ;)

I like that RG.
