There are many nice cameras out there and it all depends on what you want to do with it. If you take photos in the dark or very dim light make sure the camera you get has an actual view finder and not just the lcd display. We have a 10mega pixel Kodak camera at work that seems to be a good value.
Take Care and God Bless

John t,  Howdy.
Here are a few ideas to consider:

Image stabilization for less blur and use without tripod

Largest optical zoom, like at least 10

What size enlargements, over 2ft. by 3ft.? Get over 5 mega pixels

Lithium ion batteries and not just one

                Manual lens cover

My choice 5 yrs. ago was Olympus 725 Ultra zoom and is still serving me well. It hasn't gone down the hole.

  Yet!

Good luck with your new camera.

Since I often fish alone, I like one that has an easy to use self timer, which is also great for taking pictures of you and your buddies.
My Kodak is not easy to use in this manner, other than that I like it just fine.

I have a Kodak Easyshare V1253. Has 12mp and shoots HD videos and has a 3" screen. Shoots great pics and vids. Paid $300 for it the other year when it was just released. Happy with it thus far.

Here are things that I find useful (or NOT) in a “point & click” type of digital camera;

--Decent optical zoom

--Macro setting

--Ergonomic handle for ease of 1-handed operation… especially if you take those “holding the fish out with the other hand shots” shots.

--ability to turn the flash on/off (especially ON in lighted conditions)

--Forget any references to DIGITAL zoom… it is a parlor trick that zooms the “image” (and reduces resolution in the process)

--Different size (format) picture settings… smaller pic’s = more pic’s, bigger pic’s = nicer print blow-ups. For example: 640 x 480 pixels is perfect for posting pic’s to websites. 1600 x 1200 is good for blow-ups to 8” x 10” frames, etc.

--Don’t get too carried away with MEGAPIXELS… more are more money, and unless you’re making billboards you’ll have little use for them in many cases.

--A timer is great too if you fish alone and want to get yourself in the picture.

--Order it from B&H Photo in NYC… and if you can, wait until “Cyber Monday” (the big on-line shopping day… first Monday after Thanksgiving)... great deals on-line; sales, free shipping, other goodies, etc.

I have a Cannon AR1000IS  (I think that's right - relying on my memory.  I know the 1000 part is right)  It works well and does do video.  If you want to do much video, you will need a large SD Card.  Videos eat lots of memory.  I think it sells for about $180.  I like mine.

I was close, it's an A1000IS.  Here is a link to it on Canon's web site:  http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&fcategoryid=183&modelid=17479
It has most of the features mentioned on other posts, like turning flash off, self timer, zoom, video, a place to screw in a tripod, plus more.  It even has a setting for taking pictures in snow and night scenes and more.  Can you tell I like mine?

I have a Casio Exslim & love it, have had it for a couple years and works flauless.  My wife just bought a Nikon cool pic and that is a nice camera as well.  Both were under $200 more in the $150 range.  Happy shoping.
