Belgrade Lakes info
« on: Nov 13, 2009, 11:56 AM »
I want to hit the belgrade lakes for some pike on North Pond this January.  Does anyone recommend a guide, hotel, baitshop or any help would be great.  Also does anyone know if there is usually ice by the first?  thanks

fire off a PM to Mike G. i think he can help ya. you should be good for safe ice. north pond is usually the first to freeze up, last year i was on it about a week before x-mas.

I wouldn't be so sure. Theres some tricky spots early on, tread lightly. Long, Messelonskee, and Great can all have open water in Jan. when everything seems frozen tight. Especially Long in front of green Island. I have seen that open in feb. on the coldest winters. Messelonskee can burp once and open up a 20' wide swath a mile long on the east shore by the music camp over night. 8)
How they biten

I live about 15 minutes from this pond... havent caught a descent pike in 3-4 yrs, either ice or open water. Not saying descent pike arent coming out of there, but its sloooooow!!.

I'd sueegest on going to great pond

But wild things in oakland is a great bait shop, only 10-15 minutes from North Pond.

As far as pike are concerned, it is a crap shoot in my opinion.  Some times those pricks are more co-operative than other times.  I Have to admit that I struggled with pike last winter on the belgrades.  I prefer to fish long myself.  I would suggest sabbatus IF action is your concern.  As far as big fish, belgrades could cough one up one any given day.

As far as bait goes, the "All around fence company" just past christies is a stand up place.  They will even let you cull bait yourself, and they are willing to talk.  Nikki's and Joe's are pretty good too.  Nikki will have some cocker fall fish from time to time.

I fished Great Pond last year and had 1 real flag all day and I blew it on the hook set. Shiner was all torn up. I hit Sabattas later in the year and did well on 25 in pike. For action, Sabattus is the place to go. For size, the Belgrades.

They are catching small pike on North Pond. Nothing big so far but this pond and can produce some good ones, although it can be very very slow.
