Kayak Fishing
« on: Mar 17, 2010, 01:38 AM »
Now that the ice is just about gone here in Central New York its time for me to get out my Ocean Kayak Prowler 13 fishing kayak. I was out last Thursday March 11, 2010 from the rt 13 bridge in Sylvan Beach to the ice pack at the entrance to Oneida lake. There were a few guys still left on the ice but not me. I was marking fish in the 12-18 fow range, mostly suspended fish. I bounced a few different ice jigs of the bottom while drifting with the current until I anchored 10 feet from the ice pack on the lake. Not a real good day fishing, the wind was from the east and the H20 temp was 37.5 at the open surface. Picked up a few perch and a white perch off the bottom jigging but no eyes like I had hoped to see waiting to go up stream. I have a few days off coming up towards the end of the month, I am planning on getting onto a few smaller lakes and checking on the gill bite as well as possibly hitting big bay for the first time. Does any one know where I can launch to get on with a yak. Also I have fished the Oswego river and the mouths of 8 and 9 mile creeks for browns and stealhead and that will be getting good here soon as well. Hook into a nice big brown or stealhead  and hang on for a while. Hey it beats the hell out of fishing the vs's channel watching Bill dance.

I have a hobie revolution, and its fantastic to fish out of.  Each year starts out with the striper run up the Hudson River, then some lake fishing,  the Jamica Bay striper tournament, more lake and stream fishing, and eventually some fishing in the sound.

There is nothing like the havoc a blue fish can bring on the deck of kayak.  Just make sure their facing away from you.

I like that... definitely teeth with fins!!

My In laws are from Maine, I go up in July and August and hit the backsets of the tidal areas in the morn and evening for the stripers. I have yet to hook into a real trophy 36+ incher in a kayak but I will keep trying. Just a 24 incher is a good sleigh ride!! I also try drifting on the penobscot bay with clams, cutbait or mackerel you never know what will bite on the bottom??

I hooked into a 32 inch bluefish last year that took me for a ride. That was a great fight.

My favorite lure is by far the tube and worm.     This year I'm targeting weakfish at the Jbay tournament to try for the gland slam.

I wish that I did live closer to the sound, but then I never get anything done.

im a fellow yakker. take my heritage featherlite from small ponds - saltwater in cape cod.
its crazy getting towed by a big fish, eliminates the need for drag too!
the gill bite should really heat up soon, 2 or 3 weeks afte rice out seems to be the ticket. good luck and be safe.

I have a canoe and an Otter Stealth 1200 that I fish small waters out of . The last couple of years I've been thinking a fishing kayak intrigues me . I've never paddled a kayak before and I think that has something to do with my interest in this . Can you guys in the know enlighten me with the nitty gritty of it all ? Is the juice worth the squeeze as far as persuing it or is the canoe just as good ? Whats the Pro's and whats the Cons ?

What would you recommend for a yak? I am debating on buying either a canoe or a yak. Any suggestions?

Depends on what type of fishing you'll be doing.  Most serious guys are running sit on tops from manufacturers like Ocean Kayak, Hobie, Native, and Wilderness Systems.  A Sit-in type will keep you drier and warmer in colder climes but is virtually impossible to re-enter if you fall out (which does not happen nearly as much as anyone would think).  A SOT is easy to climb back onto in an emergency situation.

I started with a SIK, then moved up to an Ocean Kayak Trident 13, and finally this year I settled on a Hobie Revolution.

Hey KB, who's your local club or affiliation?  I run Yakfisher.net up in Ontario, Canada.  A buddy and I made the 1000 mile roundtrip to JBay last season, had an absolute blast.  We've convinced another 3 or 4 members to tag along this year.  Can't wait for May!

Good fishin'!
Don

Thanks!

Kayak Fishing Stuff used to run the tourny, but they closed up shop, and only the forum is still active.  They are the closest to a club in my area.

Some of the other area kayak fishing forums are:

http://www.kayakfishingstuff.com/
http://www.newenglandkayakfishing.com/
http://www.noreast.com/discussion/TopicList.cfm?forum_ID=17
http://www.stripersonline.com/surftalk/forumdisplay.php?f=164

Bucketmouth, your going to love the Revo.  I used to have a Prowler 15, and it was a good fishing platform, but it was kind of big for the local ponds and creeks that I like to explore.  I sold it and picked up the Revo and havent looked back.  Yes its more expensive, but for what it gives me, its worth it.

Last year I was able to reach the far end of the Pumpkin Patch at JBay.  Never could have done that with the Prowler.  Not and make it back in time.  The Revo really shines when its windy, I was able to go against the wind and current with ease, something that was difficult with the Prowler, and virtually impossible in my starter yak, the Scrambler XT.

Let me know if you want to hangout at Jbay.  I should be there from Thursday to Sunday, weather permitting.
