The GPS (E-Trex Legend) that I have, you have to purchase software to download the "topo" maps. What GPS do you have?  ??? ???

Like fishercat said you have to purchase the software first. National geographic makes a great product that works great with my gps. I own a Cobra 500.

For my gps it was $100 for the topo version. It was pre loaded with a base map (major highways ) Purchased software from Cabelas :)

Try reading the maual with the gps unit.  It will tell you this step by step.  If you are gonna spend that kind of money for one, take the time and read. Learn how to use it properly.
