Well said mungo.

Bottom line...A $40 trap should have better steel.

If you speak the truth about your calls and emails...Jack Traps gets an "F" and has lost another customer.

After reading this thread, and I know it's dated,  I think it still comes down to customer service. I personally haven't had a problem with Jack Traps but as with anything they will need some maintenance. Also as others have said word of mouth travels.
In defense of Tim I don't know what transpired so I will hold off any judgement and try to contact him myself.

I think a website like this one can "make or break" a manufacturer...

Positive feedback travels fast- negative comments travel even faster.

The good guys with great service deserve every penny, but the guys who forget that the buyer pays his bills may as well get out of the business.

I just got off the phone with Tim and he explained he remembered the call. He said he tried to explain as with anything things will need maintenance. A little gun oil on the steel before putting them away is the easiest way.
As far as going with SS or cadmium there are drawbacks. They have a tendency to bend over time that is why he uses spring steel. He went on to explain he only uses top of the line materials as the Jack Traps are meant to last a lifetime .... with a little maintenance. He also mentioned that the kind of rust the gentleman explained would only happen if stored improperly .. stored in damp area and/or not oiled. He also explained he was prepared to make him an offer when the conversation didn't go so well. Not replace everything for free but work with him.
If any one has any problems they can e-mail or call Jack Traps and they will do their best to remedy things.

The steel he is using is plain old blue finish spring steel. I've have some of it around my shop and it rusts up fast and has no business being on a tipup IMO. Just sitting in the shop it rusts up. Stainless spring steel will work great for the tipups but it is quite a bit more expensive than plain steel spring steel and I'm shure thats why its not being used. If you want to use steel you have to give it a good plating or galvanizing. I have several seasons on my HT Windlass tipups with the flat spring steel and they don't have a spot of rust on them and never got oiled either.

I bought some Jack Traps last year.  Was quite pleased with them.
They have their pluses, and minuses, just like my Heritage Lakers.
After reading this thread recently, I got them out of storage and checked
the spring steel for rust.  There was very minor surface rust on some.
I dry off my gear before storing, but didn't apply a light coat of oil before
storage last year.  The amount of rust was very little, nothing to make me
want to replace or return the traps, or call up and complain.  I put a light
coat of oil on them and put them away.

I think the only way to get what I would really like in a trap is to make some myself someday.  Until then, I'll use what I have, as long as it works.

Interesting thread. I own one Jack Trap it is nice, and I oil it and take care of it. I was going to buy more for 2010 but I am leaning toward polars...I like to see the fish run with it I guess.

Jack traps are a good trap. They cost a little more but I feel you get a better product. I do agree with the fact that the steel used for the flags should be of a higher quality or stainless. I just don't understand the bashing of this product. If you like them fine , if not fine. Vote with your dollar and enjoy what ever trap you choose.

Yup, think so, read my review of the new Jiffy 3500 series auger.  My peticular model was a piece of non metalic, oops, can't use that next word here.  There are good ones and then my individual auger.
same with tip ups to a degree. With cars, never buy a Monday or Friday made car.  Could be with tip ups and augers as well?
