Blue back trout
« on: Nov 26, 2009, 07:49 PM »
I just got a book called Bound For Munsungan. Its the history of hunting and fishing camps in Maine. In the book they talk about blue back trout that are survivors from the ice age and are only left in ten ponds in the world, all of them in maine. Has anone ever iced one of them?

They are similar to char and they got stuck in the lakes during the ice age.

In the rule book for Maine they lump Blueback and Sunapee trout under the char name.

I've only caught them open water and I am assuming the waters they are found in would tend to not being open to ice fishing. Not sure on all lakes though as I only know a couple lakes with Blues and one with Sunapee but they are closed to ice fishing.

the blueback trout are reminants of ancient waters found in the state of Maine, they used to be thick around the rangley area around the turn of the century and were in fact a staple food source for many locals as they spawned in the streams thick enough to be netted in fact they used to say they ran so thick that there was hardly any water left in the brooks.  The  brookies used to feed on them in these lakes and grew big on these bluebacks.  In fact the downfall of the brook trout population in the rangley lake areas coinceded with the downfall of these ancient fish.  I am almost positive that these ponds are closed to ice fishing as well

I caught both blue backs and sunapee when I lived in Maine.  Every lake I know of that had them was closed to ice fishing.  That was 15 years ago....
