Ice Fishing Line
« on: Dec 23, 2009, 07:36 PM »
I am currently using Micro Ice 2 lb. test line. I'm already gettin tired of my line being kinked and not be able to cinch up a good knot. What is everyone else using out there?

I just put some Suffix 3 lb ice line on my new Thornebros Sweetheart Perch. I've only been out once since but it worked great with no mememory for loops or twists.

I use 4lb. Trilene XL with about 20" of 2 lb. Seaguar flourocarbon leader.  Works for me, so I haven't switched in years.
Sometimes nothin' is a real cool hand!

Got 1 lb fireline on lot of rods now. Bought big spool from berkly outlet in Spirit, can I say that, or is that a big secret like anglers bay? Don't want to let the cat out of the bag bout that. lol. Anyway, happy with it, nice and responsive n no give and feel is great for light biters. First put 4 & 6 lb on walleye rigs fishing last year @ LOW and love it. Go with crystal, nice and clear. Got a big Abu reel on ice rod n its even better. Don't have line twist and other bs like mono. I tried spooling on half of real and put mono as backer as they say but didn't like at all. Got it on full reels n will keep em. Spent a lot for it but well worth in long run. Later

I use the 3lb cajun red lightning.  Works great in murky and clear water.  Can't even see it when it is in the water.

Always use 2 or 4 lb. trilene XL.  Has never failed through the ice or open water.  Have tried various other lines and end up with memory problems and always seem to go back.  Think I am done even trying the other lines due to how much I spend tearing it off then buying the Berkley again.

I've used P-Line's Flourice line the past two seasons. It's a strong line with suppleness under cold conditions--and it has a flourocarbon coating which helps keep off icing. I've had real good success with the 4lb. It has excellent knot strength and doesn't seem to coil or develop kinks as much as some other lines I've used in the past. Bottom line--find a line you like and have confidence in--and go with it! I sometimes like to try different things (but I also use P-Line on my reels during summer too).

Another vote for the Cajun line.  I was very skeptical buying it, but I was after 3 lbs test and the small bait shop I stopped at was out of everything else.  I put it on my reel and was very impressed.  Seems strong, low vis under water and really handles nicely.  One thing I will tell you is DO NOT BUY THE ICE ARMOR LINE.  Worst line I've ever used.  Picked up some 4 lbs of that and used it once.  Stripped it off and threw it away.  Enough of the rant; it is Christmas Eve after all..... ;D

Panfish= 2# Trilene Micro Ice
Perch = 4# Fireline Micro Ice Crystal
Walleye = 4-6# FMIC
Toothy Critters = 6-8# FMIC

I'm a big believer in the Fireline now after using mono exclusively for a looooong time. You can't beat the Crystal for the clear waters around here. It's thinner than mono and a heck of a lot stronger.
