x-mas on the Ruby Res. 2009
« on: Dec 16, 2009, 01:29 PM »
Two old friends traveling many miles will meet & camp & fish on the shores of the Ruby a few days before Christmas. Neither has ever ice fished there, and both are fairly green horned to the sport. We're both seasoned cold weather idiots and would appreciate any advice on tackle & techniques for ice fishing that cold, windy, desolate, beautiful reservoir.
Thanks from Scotty & Mark.

I don't fish the Ruby that much myself, but I have a neighbor who likes it quite a bit.  He has been up twice in the past several days.  Almost everyone is limiting in pretty quick order.  He is a firm believer in kernels of corn on his hook, but he also uses worms and maggats with great results.  I don't think any particular jig is working any differently than another kind.  If you havn'et fished it much before, just get in the vicintiy of others and have a ball.  There is usually a crowd somewhere on the ice up there.

I have fished the ruby a hand full of times with pretty good success.  I always remember doing well.  I would do like waterloo says and fish near other fisherman, but you can go just about anywhere and get them.  Most people are pretty friendly, especially ice fishing, so just go and spark a conversation and see what that gets you.  I love rat finkes, green, orange always work good.  Maggots and meal worms and crawler chunks should get some hits.  I'd stay in about 8-15 f.o.w. and see what happens.  Most of all have fun, if the Reservoir sucks, bring your fly rod and fish the river below, its awesome.

Thanks a lot for the replies. I will be sure and list a full update after our trip. Good fishing.

Doesn't corn kill the fish if they steal your bait?  I think that's why it's illegal to use corn in WY.
So many fish, so little time.

Good question.  I don't use corn myself, but my friend who does has caught fish that are plum full of corn.  I doubt that they digest very easily, so it is possible that you have a point.
