Calling all the hardcore! Who's fishing with no shanty?

Have only been ice fishing a couple years but I just bought a shanty this year for the kids and to entice the wife into to trying it.  I'll probably still sit outside unless it's real windy but we will see.

I rarely use a house when I ice fish. Despite having several usually they just haul the gear.  The key is having a good ice suit.  I use the Snosuit and I swear it is impossible to get cold in that thing.  The key is all the padding in the knees.  When my knees get cold they get sore so having all the padding in the Snosuit knees is nice.

 I don't own one and have toughed it out since I was a teenager. I carry my gear in a trappers basket , I like to move around. I think a sled now is going to be on my list to haul my stuff around. But a recent trip to Gander with the lil lady and she hopped into to the shelters and said " this is nice you should get one "  ... So hopefully soon I'll be able to finally get one and atleast get out of the wind. I do get tired of the breeze blowing through my ears

ive got 1 but if my buddys want to drag it they can use it.i love lookin out at the scenery unless its super windy. i like being outside

I was fishing in -49 temps last year. Propane was frozen so my heater wouldn't work. Wasn't any warmer in my ice cube so for the next few days we backed into the wind and cleaned our hole every minute.

 I consider myself a girly man when I fish with the likes of some oldtimers around here. One was my neighbour and first day I met him he was sewing up a deep 5 inch gash on his leg. (Axe hit to leg) He would wince occasionally then take another glug of his moonshine jug then back at his sewing his flesh.

Another time he was trapping back in very remote country. His snowmachine went thru the ice and rested in 60 feet of water. He could see it in the crystal clear water. He had to get his machine out so he tried diving down to attach a rope to it. He couldn't quite make it down that deep, so he got a gunny sack and filled it with rocks, set it on the side of ice. Jumped in, pulled the sack of rocks over the edge, held on and rocketed to the bottom, attached the rope to sled then surfaced, and pulled his machine out.
No I'm just a wuss when I fish with the likes of George Budz.

Speaking of hardcore....I think they should have a survivor series that drops contestants off in the artic circle. First one out the 500 miles wins the loot.
You only get enough clothes to survive the -60 temps. Forget the mind games princess....that aint gonna help you. "The tribe has spoken"....more like "Most of the tribe is frozen stiff"  Sorry I'm getting off topic.

Never used one, been ice fishing for 30yrs. or so. My dad is 70 yrs. old and still refuses to use a shanty. I see guys out on the ice with them and it seems to me they spend more time out of them then in them..... Also seems like a hassle when you move around as much as we do....

It does not matter to me at 45 still going out on the ice in any weather.

I just started ice fishing a few years ago and have yet to buy a shack.  When all my buddies go we pile into a big Eskimo 6 Man pop-up because a few of them are panseys. But when I'm fishing solo or just a close friend l'm in the open air.  Like said before, I enjoy the scenery and looking around.  Little shacks make me feel closed in.

 No shanty here for me in ontario, got a nice suit and gloves, i run and gun with a hand aurger, its quick and silent, i'm like an ice fishing ninja!

 Shanties are for big girls panties!

I have for years and still do on occasion fish and/or hunt to the brink of hypothermia. I guess that I have learned over the years, if you don't need to freeze - don't!

2 years of not using one and chasing stuff across the ice i learned I wanted one.  Every lake I fish has crazy winds all day everyday.  Not having to deal with it is really nice.

I'm usually fishing in the open with my sled in tow. Enjoying the scenery and moving around a lot.
But when the wind just wont give up I have a lightweight hunting pop-up blind I'll throw up. Takes about 10 seconds to set up and take down and only weighs about 15 pounds.

my shanty is to big to pull by hand, so im on the bucket too.there are days though i wish i had a little pop up or something. sometimes ill flip up my sled and hide behind that, it provides a little psycological comfort but not much more than that.
