Pre-ice scouting?
« on: Nov 28, 2009, 06:18 PM »
Bro and I fished a lake today from a boat that we're familar with. We were looking for for some info to make our ice season a little more successful and maybe catch some dinner. The fish were'nt biting but we marked some good waypoints on areas we've fished in the past. There was some structure in our ice spots that were easier found from a boat. I'm fairly new to IS but never heard of any one else using this tactic? has anyone had some success trying this?

Ofcourse. A waypoint is a waypoint. Gps will put you back on that spot no matter how you get there boat, quad, walk. Ill bet most people who use gps find most of their waypoints during open water.

I have marked waypoints when fishing open water. Sometimes they are still productive sometimes they are not while giving them a shot on hardwater. But it never hurts to have structure marked. At least that is how i feel about it

Every year, a weedline can move. Maybe a few feet, maybe gone. My GPS is standard equip when I ice fish. Of course you can use it for markin waypoints such as dropoffs, bottom changes, ledges, rock piles etc.I dont winterize my fishin boat till december, for the the simple fact... I try to wait as long as I can, THEN go out and mark what weedlines are left. I JUST winterized it a few days ago. I had it out on bass lake and maxinkuckee. Of course on these lakes its not so much findin the weedlines, but the suttle breaks, and curves next to structure where these weedlines are. With the 29 str8 days of above normal temps we have had, the weedlines are not dying off as fast as they usually do. But I waited as long as I could, I had to winterize for this weeks temps. I did however find a couple spots to mark. 8)
