The Reservoirs
« on: Nov 28, 2009, 07:06 PM »
If Massachusetts had a clue, and wants revenue...

why don't they open up the Wachusett & Quabbin Reservoirs to the hard water guys? If they charged a $20 special season license I'd buy one tomorrow to fish there for lakers and salmon through the ice.

SW license, BAH! HUMBUG!

Hi PK1,

I'm not trying to get into a p'n session.

Your first point holds no water. I know it's drinking a water supply hence the title "The Reservoirs". My point was if they rent gas powered boats to the general public why not open it to ice fishing?

And you second point is on thin ice at best. Are you saying that ice fishermen are bigger slobs than boat and shore fishermen during the open water season, "because they leave trash on the ice" ???

Lastly your smoker reference doesn't even deserve a reply.

That would be totally awesome to fish Quabbin/Wachuset.  Can you imagine?  Wow....We'd actually have "2" whole lakes to jig for lakers in this state. I've often thought of how fun that would be to icefish on Quabbin.  I'd also pay to fish there through the ice.  I think it would be worth it.

PK1,

Your point is well taken. Believe me I agree with you whole heartedly that trash on the ice is a problem. When I smoked my cigarette butts went into any trash I generated and took it off the water. I see slobs leaving line, beer cans and half burnt fires on the ice and am disgusted with that behavior also. And I know Wachusett's is shore fishing only.

But what my original post was trying to get at was what reasons does DCR have to close these bodies of water to ice fishing? This would allow ice fishing opportunities in MA otherwise only available in NH or ME.

How much revenue (taxes) are generated to local guides, bait shops, coffee shops and hotels at lakes like Winnipsauke, The Connecticut lakes in NH, Sebago and Moosehead in ME?

My point is that it may be worth it to MA to open these waterways. There may be a lot of reasons not to as well. It may not be cost effective to plow the access roads at Quabbin, or it is too expensive to patrol, no snowmobiles allowed, no wooden bob houses allowed. But whatever their reasons the other states make money  on it or they wouldn't continue to allow it to happen.

Don't you think the same people that litter on the ice would litter in the water during the summer? Do you think a smoker that is going to toss his butt would care if it lands on water or ice? I am not familiar with Wachuset. I am sure the people who control Quabbin have a reason for closing it during the winter. Just not sure if it is a good one or if we would ever find out what it is.

DCR has no say on the opening or closing of these bodies of water, i know because i work for them.  Those decisions are made by the MWRA, who if they had their way right now, would close both these bodies of water to open water fishing as well, under fear of "invasive species".

Me personally, i would love to ice fish it, i just don't think we will ever see it as long as a political board in Boston is overseeing the resevoirs.

Hello all,
There are certainly some good points on both sides of the coin on this one. I am one of those guys that rent a boat on Quabbin a few times a year. I saw my first Bald Eagle this past September "WOW". As a hunter/fisherman, MA isn't all that big and MA dosen't have the beautiful wide open spaces that some of the other states have. There are people out there that will unzip and pee into the wind instead of walking to 1 of those 3 porter potties. I have picked up bits of trash out of the water that must of come from out of a boat. Was it tossed? or blown out? I would love to ice fish Quabbin and pay a fee to do so but, for now, if fishing from a rental allows me to see one of a the few of Massachusetts wonders, then thats good enough for me.

Hey leave the smokers alone. I've allready got cancer and black lungs, But I always go home with everything I bring out. Butts included. Bottom line scumbags leave trash on the ice and throw stuff in the water. Leave line tangles everywhere, Beer cans, bait containers. Ect..

it will never happen, with what were going thru now we don't even know if we'll be able to get on it in the spring with our boats with this zebra mussel junk and they don't even exist in the Q.

the Q itself seldom freezes entirely and for the roads to use it would be probally be the 3 launch roads which would have to be maintained.

now you get to the point of manning these areas and the shacks that have no heat other then some small wood stoves in them are not going to be comfy for the attendants.

littering is always a problem, drive down to gate 8 on opening day and you'll see garbage on the very first day.

the Q doesn't allow dogs, alcohol or fires, plus i believe that the attendants volunteer to man the 3 launch areas (they get paid) but they volunteer to get this duty.

the use of quads or snowmobiles, never

just my thoughts

neither body of water freezes over that much. MWRA rules the water, not DCR. plus the cost to monitor/police these bodies of water in the winter is prohibitive.  they just don't have the resources and how many fisherman will fall threw the ice.  ice thickness varies quite a bit on these lakes. i know folks who have been on the 'rezzie' a couple times and believe me the thickness is not consistent by any means.

nice to think about it, but not practical here

We have a resivoir here in the Berks that is loaded with big Brookies and Bass. NO FISHING
That stinks because once in a while they will find a big dead Brookie, or Bass on the shore. About 10 years ago there was a huge fish kill and they thought about opening it up but it never got done.
If fishing was work I'd never be sick!

Actually two of the best are just down the road from me...Cobble Mountain...and Blair Pond... You otta know since you and OnekingSalmon used to fish it when you were younger...

I remember the stories you and Scott told me of the BIGGG fish you usta get out of there. AND they still gotta be there. Only VIPs from Springfield Water get to fish it, and now that they closed the road, we will never know how many of them are using it as their own private "pond".

Oh, and doesn't Littleville feed that resie, and don't we ice fish that and launch boats?? The pipeline goes right thru the Russell Watershed.

I am also a smoker who doesn't leave his trash on the ice, and i see plenty of butts and line on the shores of the res. some people just don't have any respect that's the bottom line. And as for fishing chu it would have to be really cold to get at deep water anyway.

Can't fish the lake if here is any ice. They decide when they open it up. April 1st isn't always opening day
