Jigging for shiners
« on: Dec 07, 2009, 07:11 PM »
There is a pond that i trap shiners in the fall and i want to know if anyone knows a good jig/bait to try. I have caught some big ones in the summer on my flyrod but never had one in the winter. The pong has an inch of ice now so i figured i would see if anyone had suggestions while it thickens up.

thanks

Thanks.
I figured a size 14 or 16 hook would be small enough.

I used to debarb my hook when catching shiners. Used one maggot on a fly hook for bait.
Spring bobber on rod or a real tiny bobber. Used the shiners for bass fishing or northern.

I find it hard to target them exclusively thru the ice, but once ya get into a school they'll even hit micro plastics  ;D

When I was living in Florida we used Hayabusa brand Sabiki rigs to great effect on the saltwater minnows. Don't see why it wouldn't work for shiners. We had the best luck with the Hayabusa rigs vs other brands. They are more expensive but that's all i would buy.
