Right up until the time Honey acccidentally mixed a "filet" of one of those nasty things in with some trout, I actually believed that if a given organism swam in water or crawled along the bottom, it would be fit to eat, properly prepared. I no longer believe that, for at least that particular bottom-feeder is not fit for human consumption.  :P

Back in MI as a kid, we ate a lot of spring time suckers that came up  the river from Lake Michigan.  Too bony to eat fried, we would pressure cook and can them up. Canning disolved the small Y bones and with crackers and  eggs, the patties were pretty good.   We also  salted and smoked them.  $2 each at the bar,  made money for gas to go catch more. The  fish fresh up the river from the big lake weren't half as muddy tasting as the  ones that lived in the  river year round.
We NEVER ate the carp. There were those that did.

They taste pretty good once you Re-Cycle them.....I had a friend stay with me once when he and his wife were fighting. I came home from work one day and he told me he was going to cook some of my fish fillets for his lunch but was afraid I would be mad. I told him to eat all he wanted, but then gave in and told him they were sucker fillets. :o He was glad he didn't try them.
