Tica reels 500 series???
« on: Nov 09, 2009, 05:56 PM »
Tica reels, 500 series, I've seen a lot of hype on here about them. Are they as good as I read? I'm looking for a quality reel for Walleye. Any information on these reels would be greatly appreciated.

I'll let you know as soon as we have first ice here.  I bought 3 of the Tica Cetus GV500's over the summer and haven't tried 'em yet.

A lot of positive and no negative comments about them that I read on here.  Plus the price.  I found them for under $30.  I bought one, compared it to what I already have, and bought two more.  I put two of 'em on Jason Mitchell SB rods.  I have a feeling they are going to become my favorites this winter.

I have 8 Tica 500s (LF,GV and SB versions) and I like them a lot. If you can stand to spend over $50 on a reel I would go for a a Shimano Sedona, Sahara or Symetre 500 though as IMO they are a better reel than the Ticas and will hold more line and have a smoother drag.

I could see the difference  between the LF and the others, less bearings. The GV, SS and SB versions, I'm assuming SS is stainless steel??? But couldn't find the real differences between them? Any idea?

icejunky, I checked the Symetre 500, a little steep at $82 bucks on Ebay!

Thanks for the input...

Here is a web site that lists the difference in the four Tica 500 series reels:

The only difference in the SS and SB is the holes in the spool.

Jeff, thanks for the site, great info. I may be investing in a SB500 and match it up with a St. Croix or Jason Mitchell rod.
