I love them both. I do like the quiet of hard water but I get to fish with more friends and family during open water season so I enjoy each season while is happening but am always looking for ward to the next one

I love the quiet.

Have you ever been in the middle of a large lake with the huge dime sized snowflakes falling all around you? Sometimes when it is dark and dead still, you can hear the snowflakes landing on the ice. It sounds like tiny sleigh bells. That snow also deadens the sound from the outside world to make you feel totally isolated. It is pretty easy to loose yourself on nights like that.

I love this more than anything.  You just can't beat spending an entire day AND night out on the hardwater.  It's solitude.

I have less in my permanent shanty than most boats. Ice is cheaper and yes, more fun.

I generally like both equally. Except for some reason I really caught the icefishing bug this year so I can't wait till the lakes freeze over.

Love them both!!!
I guess I just love fishing. I use the boat until ice forces me to put it away. Then it's the shanty until ice melts and then back to the boat. I have icefished and fished from my boat both in the same week.
Take Care and God Bless
Rick

I really like ice fishing more right now because it gives me an opportunity to fish places I cant as I dont have a boat. For us shoreline guys its a great way to get out onto the lake.

and then you get the shotgun sound of the ice cracking, and it scares the hell out of you, lol

Its the sound of the icemakers drums! Love ever bit of it. Can't get that kind of stuff from open water.

:icefish: That water will be hard very soon! I bet the mood is now swinging to " I prefer Ice better". Either way its my favorite. Sounds of snow flakes hit the ice and a distant sound of an auger in the night. Ahhh, That's almost Heaven for me, ALMOST.

i love the ice for the quiet as long as the sleds race elseware they get as bad as pwc's but i also like the water so its a 50/50 with me. like previously stated i think it's the time of the year that is the deciding factor. of coarse ....i would fish in a can of piss if i had a chance of catching something.

yeah, for open water the most i do is buy stuff and read magazines. ice fishing i'm hunting down every scrap of info that i can find, plus i'm buying stuff and even though it's cold i seem to be able to concentrate more while i'm out on the ice.

At least in my area, far more people fish thru ice than in open water.  Why that is.... my theory is it costs more to fish open water.  More Gas, boats are expensive, and a lot of the tackle is more expensive.  I don't own a boat, and the way gas prices are now, fluctuating all over the place, I might not ever.  It is much cheaper to fish on ice, even if you get a lot of the toys:

Average Price (I think....)
Flasher: $400
Camera: $250
Auger: $400-$500
Portable Shanty: $200-$1000 (how comfy you want to be?)
Heater: $150
3 Tip-ups: $100 (for good ones)
3 Jig poles: $150 (for average ones w/reels)
Skimmer: $10
Jigs, spoons, etc: God only knows
ATV or Sled: $5000
TOTAL: Around $7000 (and you can do it for ALOT less, or more, how much you got?)

Boat:  Small and not all that well equipped: $10,000 (yeah, you can get a used boat less, but I'm talking new prices here)

Boat: Nice and big with room to roam: $30,000 or more.

Of course, if you got money to burn for ice fishing:
Prebuilt crank down trailer hardside shack: $10,000 to $20,000

Anyway, I guess my arguement is that it's far easier and cheaper to fish on ice for the average guy.  A lot of us are stuck on shore during open water, we don't want to (or can't) spend that kind of money on a boat.  And shore fishing around here sucks.
