I have had one for the past 3 years and as said with mdeutsch, it is very uncomplicated and I really love it. I had never had any interference, and I am also sending mine in for the upgrade which will make it even better. Here are the things they are improving if you have an older model.
1) ft. zoom Capability - Compared to the existing 3.2 version or older VPG 2.0, where only 5’ 10’ or 15’ zoom windows can be viewed, you can now adjust in 1 ft. increments within each of the zoom ranges so you can zoom in to exactly the part of the water column you want to view. This is a huge improvement and the most requested feature from the customer feedback we received.
2) Improved Noise (or interference) Rejection Capability. The 5.6 has an improved noise filter so that it is much easier to "tune out" other units without affecting your ability to see your jig / fish etc.
3) Surface clutter Elimination – The 5.6 eliminates virtually all surface clutter feedback, so that bottom detection and digital depth readings are always accurate. The surface clutter phenomenon was the root of what became our most frequently asked question about the units’ performance. The existing models sometimes display the "surface-clutter" as depth, so the digital depth on the bottom of the display will change from the actual depth, to 2.3, 3.1, or wherever the surface clutter exists. Technically speaking, there is nothing "wrong" with the unit, however it can be very frustrating to deal with if this is happening a lot, that’s why it was critical for us to incorporate this new feature.
This is what they had told me in the e-mail when I had asked them about it.
