Ice Shelter
« on: Aug 25, 2009, 03:40 PM »
Going to be taking my kids this year more ice fishing. Probably going to be doing more fishing in Maine this year. Looking for suggestions on what would be a good shelter to get? :icefish:

I'm looking into getting a Clam 6800. I usually have a few adults fishing with me, so this is what i need. 6X8 floor size, with a center height of 66". How many kids are you bringing? Maybe a Clam 5600 would work also.

 Check this site out.

Fisrt I would suggest on looking at your fishing situation: do you have a snomobile, 4-wheeler, drive or walk on the lake.

I have a pop up 2 man ice cube and absoulutly love it. It has no floor, and comes with a backpack about 3' long, and 10" wide, only weights 19 lbs, fits in a jet sled with the rest of my gear, goes up in about 60 seconds, can stand up to any wind the maine lakes wll throw at you, has black material which heats up guickly in the sun.... the best thing I can bring it to different lakes with no hassle from a bulky sled. my 2 man can easitly fit 3 adults, they also sell a 4 man. Prices are roughly 150 for the 2 man, 180-200 for the 4 man.

I've never used one of the Clam style shacks, but are easier if you have a sled or wheeler. the cons i've always heard of are there heavy and bulky.

I would 100% reccomend the pop up style, but that just my opinion, i'm sure you'll hear all aspect of shack world.

I have the Clam Guide and love it, sets up fast but like Pike said the flip overs do weigh more. My Guide is 82lbs which isn't bad.  If your looking at 3 people the Voyager weighs in at 135lbs :o

My youngest is now 17, but I remember the good old days. I use to haul out more toys and gameboy crap than fishing equipment. But I'll tell ya, I'd do it again in a heartbeat! My oldest just had a daughter so I'm looking forward to the Grandpa fishing exscursions ;D

The cube looks like a great idea because then I can put it on the sled and drag it behind me as I'm on foot. :icefish:

Thats the great thing about the hub style pop out shelters. I carry all my traps, my chair, extra clothes, and just about everything else in the back pack it comes in.

Some other models that are similar to the ice cubes are: killzone igloo and eskimo quickfish.

I've havent had anyone fishing with me that didn't like it. I would highly recomend them where your on foot..... there a lot lower in price as well.

I've got the four man cube and can't say enough good things about it. I love not having a floor to slip on in boots and worrying about my creepers damaging it. It's like fort knox in the wind. The four man weighs less than 40lbs(I think). My buddy has the killzone version. The killzone has more window in it but you anchor it down by the skirt. It doesn't fight the wind as well. The icecube has adjustable tether straps on all four hubs. It's anchored from basically halfway up the shack so it sits a lot more steady in high wind. Here's a pic.
The angle of the dangle is directly proportionate to the heat of the beat.

I've got a 4 man ice cube, picked it up on ebay for cheap, haven't had a problem with it and I love it.  I took my inlaws out this winter, it started snowing/raining, cruddy weather, I crawled in it and was dry as could be, they were all soaking.  I'm so mean, oh well, tight lines all, tight lines.  Can't wait to get out!!! >:D

Ditto on the cube (Eastman, Shappell).  I've used a few different types (Rover, DX3000, DX4000, hardside).
I really like the spacious cube design.  Not having a floor I think is a plus (reduces weight, don't worry about
tearing up a floor with creepers, does not fill with snow and ice when folding up).  Seems to have better
ventilation than the others.  Of the DX's my favorite is the 3000 due to size and weight considerations.
Check out the Shappell 6000 or similar.

I think their around 25 lb. I also have a 4 person killzone igloo. Havent used it yet, but can tell the ice cubes are higher quality. I was wondering how they'd be in the wind without the cinch strap from hub to hub.

Do you remember what you paid for your excursion Ice, that looks pretty cool. I like the big windows, makes it more enjoyable when ya got somethin to look at other than the hole on a slow day.

How about the clam corp. hub style pop-ups.  Does anyone have any experience with these?  They look a little more durable then the eastman ice cube.  I was thinking about getting one this season......but I haven't heard anything about them yet.  Maybe I'll have to just buy one and review it for you guys.

Under 100.00 on sale. It comes with carrying case and ice screws. i figure if i get 2-3 years out of use it was worth it.
good luck

Thanks Ice, I'm gonna look into one. I've got a 1man, 2man and a 3 man but the 3 man is pretty heavy and only has 2 small windows (it's homemade) it's great for days when it's real cold but a little combersome to get in and out of the truck.
