Sea sick remedies ?
« on: Mar 28, 2009, 07:13 AM »
I'm wondering if any of the anglers on this board have heard of any new inventions for motion sickness problems? I have heard of a watch type device that sends mild electric shock into your wrist that is supposed to cure your motion sickness. Has anyone heard of this device and what is it called? I have tried every known medication to cure my seasickness to no luck. I even have to take Dramamine to look at a nautical map, that's how bad I get. I really like deep sea fishing but it doesn't like me. Any replies would be appreciated.

I think you need to find out whats causing the seasickness first.
And i know that sounds stupid, but some people have inner ear problems that causes motion sickness.

and then there are people like me, i'm good to go on deck, but if i step down into the cabin its all over  lol

I have never seen 1 product out there yet, that cures this.

Ginger is a natural alternative to Dramamine etc. has the added benefit of being non drowsy, with additional health benefits.  There are a multitude of ways to make this work for you, from recipes with fresh ginger root, to tea etc.  The simplest and easiest I suppose would be ginger capsules taken before you leave the dock.  Capsules can be found at GNC and drugstores.  You will probably notice that many a smart boatsman will have a few cans of ginger ale in the lunch bag, and forego the cool creamy Lager UNTIL returning to the dock to celebrate the outing and successful catch.........

I get violently ill from motion sickness, I have since I was a little kid. I now get the Scopamine patches from my doctor that you stick behind your ear and I also get these pills called Phenegren. While yes they make me drowsy, I no longer get sick. You can combat the drowsiness by drinking energy drinks, it works for me, and I used to puke getting a ride to the mall, now I can be out on the boat all day.

Good luck!!

excellent advice...ive had literally hundreds of trips offshore. usually never had a problem. one year i was getting sick often. not violent but enough to put a dark cloud over my day. eventually figured out i was drinking too much coffee in the morning and not eating anything so once underway that coffee was just sloshing around in me until it came back out  :P dont be afraid to ask your doctor about it

I forgot to say what the Phenegren does LOL, it combats the nausea feeling in yout stomach, it makes it so that your stomach doesnt creat all of that acid that causes you to feel nauseaus and sick. So thats how I beat the sick feeling. Like I said it may not be the best thing for everyone, but it allows me to enjoy the water.

Try Sea Bands. I know many people that have used them with success. I have an inner ear disorder and sometimes I get a little queasy on the ocean. They have worked for me also.

Logging many hours on the water with clients I have seen it all. You could almost count on one out of six to go down with mal d mal. I carried the bands that put pressure on an acupressure point inside the wrist. I have had kids down and out rebound to buzzing around the boat. They didn't work for everyone but some they worked wonders. I did not give out capsules or any type pills for obvious liability issues. I have heard the patch is hands down the most effective aide in combating seasickness. I have never seen anyone on a boat sick while using a patch.

Primary combatants are a good night sleep the night before. Easy on the grease at breakfast and don't over eat. After that any of the aides listed in the thread.

People are raving over the new Relief Band. Anyone have a problem with motion sickness should look into these.

You also might want to pick your days that you go on the water.
Wait untill its glass calm, and then try it, some people just need to work their way into it untill they get used to the water.

Even some of the most seasoned crew, will get a little green after spending a day in a big ground swell.

As I had said before I once went out after downing 2 Dramamine, wearing a scapolimine patch behind my ear, wearing 2 not just 1 sea band and was drinking ginger ale. I was so sick that I actually cracked a rib with the dry heaves. Its funny though the rougher the water is the better I can tolerate it but when the ocean is calm as glass and the only movement is mild sea swells look out.Within 10 min. I am calling to a guy named Ralph! I had just talked to my father who lives out it Wis. he used to be an F4 pilot in Nam and now flys a twin engine and he was telling me about these "Relief bands". He says they are the only true cure for motion sickness. They are kind of pricey at $125 ea. but if they will actually get me out to fish the ocean than they will be worth it. I might then be able to buy back my 26'Grady White offshore from one of my fellow coworkers after I couldn't enjoy it.

I am the Cheif Engineer on the Tug Donald C, along with a commercial fisherman, lots of guys get sick, luckily I don't, but most guys hate dramamine becuase it makes u fatigue, one of my captains has wrist bands that work somehow, but this capt was really bad before, he'd be on the wheelhouse floor in a 2-4ft sea, now he's fine in 12-16, I've seen them advertised in mags, I'll research the name of the product for you, I even think you can get them at CVS, But, I'll ask my Capt.

Oh, yeah I forgot to tell you, peppermint candies and sugar water, sound wierd but it works. And Peanut Butter Crackers. The peanut butter crackers will cause you to drink more water, which you will need if you get sick.

Irish If those wrist bans were "sea-bands" then I have allready tried them. I just ordered a pair of those relief-bands and I am anxiously awaiting to try them.My so-called buddies would give me all kinds of things to try out on the water when I was sick. What I really think those guys were doing was to give more ammo to the "chum master" as they were to cheap to buy regular chum. :)

I am a retired U.S. Navy Chief and spent over 12 years at sea on various vessels.  Couldt use dramamine as it made me too tired.  Fresh minty gum and plenty of water always worked for me.

dramamine puts some people to sleep out cold too. I like to use this on the party boats. Not for me but to knock out 1/2 the charter to gain deck space.  ;D Works like magic! Anyone need some dramamine, I have plenty, take two or 3.
