TUNA Trip
« on: Mar 22, 2009, 05:29 PM »
I know this was thrown out there last year, but is anyone interested in going out on a Tuna Charter possibly in May?   I was thinking of getting a 6-pack together during Mid Week off of the cape

football bluefin show up mid may usually. nothing over 30 lbs but are fun to catch. early season is easy to have 20 fish days lots ofr action. we usually start seeing giants around the end of august and the water is warmer. mahi and yellowfin and other warmwater species also move in close. less action though the smaller fish seem to disperse.

He was talking going off the cape, and i thought that would either mean out East or on the Bank and those fish dont come till begining of june usually,  but i think you are referring to the canyons.

massfisher, we fish mainly south of block out up to 40 miles. our boat is only 23 feet so we dont venture much further. We started last year mid june and were doing well less then 5 miles off block.

3-5 miles north east of Chatham during the second week in October... The water was bubbling with them!

I cant see why it would be the captains at 160 lbs?  Because like Newbraintree said the have to be 73" to sell except that might be changing to 65" this year.

Don't know.... maybe his freezer was empty!  ???  It was the last trip he had before pulling the boat out for the season..

He made it pretty clear though!  He was actually, one of the best captains I have been with that put us on fish! Great guy too!

So there is a shortage of large Tuna out there so they are going to make the regulations smaller?  that makes sense

I believe if you have a license to seel you cannot have any bluefin in you possesion under 73. i have a recreational license in rhode island and the rule is one fish between 27" AND 47" and one fish 47" to 73" which sometimes changes in the fall

If you have a charter boat license you can sell if its over 73, but your not allowed to keep any under that, that day.  If you already have a shorter fish you have to let your sell fish go.  But they are trying to change the 73 down to 65.
