any tips on golden shinner trapping?
« on: Oct 01, 2009, 10:19 AM »
I found a small pond probably 30 yards long by 20 yards wide and about 12 feet deep filled with goldens, perch and large mouth, I'm having no luck trapping any of the goledens.  I've tried using bread at all different locations, depths and time of the year.  During the summer I catch them on worms for bait and pull them out left and right.  I get them from all sizes, from a inch long to 9 or 10 inches and as fat as my hand.  Any tips that will help trap these goldens?

Have you tried a cast net? For a pond that small, it might not be a bad idea.

Find a good spot...throw in some bread and throw the cast net...6 ft max in mass and easier to handle anyway...pick one up with a "throw ring" feature as it is alot easier to get the hang of throwing it.  Nets are very efficient and you can get a bucket full pretty quick.  However, if you dont know the spot well, throw the net a few times and if no action, drop a trap and see what happens.

I'm not much of a shiner trapping expert either, but if you can catch them with the rod and reel effectively, stay with that.  It doesn't take long for the numbers to add up and you can have fun catching them as well.  I always try what others have suggested and come up with the big goose every time.  I'm ok at catching crayfish though??  Does that count?

I've heard if you put  lightstick in the trap overnight you'll get a lot.  I guess it attracts the zooplankton the shiners love to eat.  I've never tried it, but if bread isn't working it might work for you.

the glow sticks do work sometimes but when the goldies get big they wont go in the trap the net seems to work better.try throwing out of a canoe if the edges are over grown and chum with bread crumbs and oatmeal Karl is right it works.last years pics too early to start for me that big tank is killer but a pain in the A  ;D

I have caught some nice bait fish fly fishing. Get a couple flies and cast out there near ripples.  It's kind of fun to do and if you have a barbless hook they come off no problem.
