The hooks you are talking about are circle hooks. The size depends on what brand you buy. Go to a tackle shop and get what looks right for you.

Will a circle hook work on tip-ups free spooling?
Never heard of that...

The hook won't set until you stop the line from going out. Then the fish will set the hook. You need to make sure to not set the hook and that the hook point is exposed and has room to work.

I used circle hooks on some of my traps last year and was very happy with their performance. I had a lot less missed strikes and no gut hooked fish. As far as setting the hook goes, a slight tug on the line when it tightens up worked for me.

Hali-man,
If you want to set the hook, don't use circle hooks. Circle hooks are designed to work only if the fish sets the hook, not the fisherman. If you want to set the hook, use a "J" style or a treble hook.
