 Hey Nice catch,

Does anyone have any tips on catching specks through the ice. I am winding down my season and I've gone 5 times at night for specs and nothing. Tried using a lantern, minnows , spikes and so on. I might be using the wrong rig with perch jigs. A buddy told me I need to use a bobber and let them take it a bit, but just no luck. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks! Nice meal ya got there.

i always find using a trebel or a bent hook just because of the way a speck feeds
Early to bed, early to rise, fish like heck and make up lies......

I have been getting them on waxworms only this year. They seem to hit the best right after midnight so you'll need a lantern. The only teardrop I can get them to do anything on is light brown # 10 Fatboy type (off brand) with a black dot for an eye. Very hard pattern to find. They're hitting these like a freight train - no bobber needed.

First nice catch walter gill I am envious.....just got home form work a 6:30pm back at it at 6:00am.

My best luck for specks have come on more of the horizontal jigs than the vertical hanging ones......I never use minnows anymore and if I am in a group of fisherman that are catching them I have never been out fished with minnows......just me though. And all my catches are during the day. Last ice look for the specks suspending very high in the water column. I have caught them in 30ft 2-5ft under the ice. Out of all the specks I cleaned through the years I can only remember a very few with minnows in there stomach most have some sort of bug larva's in there stomach........in fact just started smelt fishing this year and I have found more minnows in those little stomachs than I have in crappies. I also use some diffrent vertical hanging flies with out bait I have tied and will postion the knot so the hang at a 45 to 90 degrees....believe it or not this can make the difference in getting any bites.. More times than not the presentation is what makes all the difference. Yea we all get into those suicide fish once and a while where a blind man could catch them. Good luck hope one of this tips help!
