Honest Icefishermen
« on: Feb 27, 2009, 04:23 PM »
I've been reading about some of the yahoos encountered fishing and had to post this. We took a 10 day trip to Lake George in mid February. Rented a house and had to trailer up to Vets park to get on. One day in my hurry to fish, I unloaded the sled and quad, all the gear, loaded up and headed out. What I didn't do was close my drivers window or lock the truck !  After about 7 hrs of fishing we got back and I realized what I did, oops.
The back seats were full of various fishing stuff, my gps was on the seat in plain view. NONE OF IT WAS TOUCHED I would like to give a big thank you to the honest guys and gals that use that lot.

We did something similar last yr. We were out riding ATV's at a riding area and somehow managed to ride away from the truck with the door WIDE OPEN. On the center counsil was an envelope with the cash we had for our group expenses. OVER 400 bucks, not to mention all the other stuff in the truck. It was still sitting there 3 hrs later when we returned....Just goes to show there reallyt are some honest people left.

I left a shanty and my power auger in plain view unlocked in my car and walked a mile and a half out of sturgeon nothing was touched. I was thinking about it all day while out there but I sure wasn't walking back to lock it up. It is nice to see that. I won't do it again because not everyone is so lucky. One more thing recently I was headed out on a  lake to fish when I could not find my jig box. This box is everything to me. I was frantically checking my trail from the walk in when another icefisher was on the trail he noticed and asked what was wrong I told him he proceded to pull out his own box and offer anything I needed, I passed up on the offer but it was still a cool thing for him to do. I found my box, my mistake left it in the car, oops. Another time same place I packed up when a storm moved in with heavy duty winds and blinding snow and left my auger on the ground when I drove away. I made it about 6 miles when I realized what I had done. I was a bit nervous because I was among many groups of guys leaving at the same time . I turned around hoping it would still be there . I got back and there was a guy sitting in his truck, a guy I saw come off the ice right behind us, and he was "watching" my auger he had seen my vehicle a few times and figured he was in no rush and knew I would be back for it he would stick around for a bit to make sure. There really are some good people out there.

OK boys and girls........if that was NJ.......you would go back to parking lot.....NO CAR.....and once you got a ride home......you wouldn't have much in your house.

Wish everyone had experiences like you 'all.

God bless.

I was leaving a boat small boat launch one night after bullhead fishing and found a brand new full plastic boat gas can with the line and all on it. A couple of old timers had left just before us, So I take the can and leave a note posted to the pole right where the can was. I said I have your can call me and you can pick it up, or I will bring to you. I took it becuase there were still like 4 or 5 other boats out there and I figured it would be gone if I left it. the next morning the guy called me and described his gas can and came to pick it up. It just so happened to be that the guy was building a addition on his house and I am drywall contractor, I ended with a job out of it. ;D
If you consider it a sport to gather your food by drilling through 36 inches of ice and sitting there all day hoping that the food will swim by, you might live in northern New York

Good thread. Especially being the vet's park lot. It's my home away from home all winter.

I rarely lock my vehicle but never have anything disturbed either. Hmmm. I wonder if the empty/open gun case on the seat has anything to do with that?

Sportsman's vehicles lose less than non-sportsman's vehicles on a seasonal basis. Again I gotta wonder if the crooks know I might be watching from the woods with a loaded(?) firearm. ;D

Unfortunately there are plenty of people out there that will take advantage of others.  My friend asked me why I always lock my truck ... I thought that was a silly question.  He told me he didn't worry about that kind of thing and if they wanted to steal his piece of junk, well they could keep it!  I told him it's not the truck I worried about, it's the stuff INSIDE of it.   He said "I never lock, nobody has ever taken anything."
... That same friend had his tackle box and rods stolen a few weeks later in broad daylight in a Stewarts parking lot.  He just went in for a cup of coffee and when he came out, it was all gone.  $500 worth the tackle plus 3 combos.  Ouch!  He thinks twice now.

The only reason I dont lock my doors is when I lived in California I had gone fishing and got back to my vehicle and my window was smashed, I fished in that same location a dozen times after that never locked the doors, I didnt even roll the windows up and I didnt have a problem, if they want it bad enough they will get in. I just dont leave anyhing of value in my car anymore. Good to hear there are good people out there. If I ever caught someone breaking into my car we wouldnt have to worry about them breaking in to anyone elses car. I work to damn hard for my money to deal with that.

Well I lock my doors ... period.  If somebody really wants whats inside and breaks the windows, so be it.  But I'm not going to give them an open invitation.

A while back I had my truck "broken" into and they stole 50 CDs, my head unit, my radar detector, $150 sunglasses, a $60 Sahara reel on a $100 Compre rod, a tackle box with several hundred worth the stickbaits, and my work binder with all my important documents and contacts, etc.  Turns out my insurance company didn't cover it because I didn't lock to doors.  If they had smashed my windows (which rarely happens around here ... it attracts to much attention) I would have been covered.  Not to mention my car alarm would have been armed and would have woke me up!  So now I lock it, plain and simple.  The only time I ever had anything stolen out of my vehicle is when the doors were unlocked ... thieves around here look for easy targets.

Not locking your doors is a very poor way to deter theft.  Better yet, leave your keys in the ignition, roll your windows down, and put as many valueables in your car/truck as you can ... and have fun explaining that to your insurance company.
