Long Lake
« on: Jan 25, 2009, 11:37 PM »
Hope everyone had a good weekend.  Made it out to Long lake on Saturday.  We got there around 8 and the wind was blowing as usual.  Got the quick fish 6 set up fired the heaters and got down to business.  Started catching dollies almost immediately.  I maneged about 5 lakers myself all under 20 inches.  My buddies each caught a handfull of lakers but no size and few and far BTW.  It was kind of frustrating to work your baits without the dollies just destroying them.  We were fishing in about 35ft. of water out from the big rock in the water.  In my opinion Long lake is a bust this year, all the big fish will be gorging themselves on all the little dollies.  It will be next to impossible to get one of those fat big boys to bite.  There were a few other people out and they were singing the same song as me.  Maybe at ice out another trip will be in order, for now its time to spear pike.

Big fish in long lake are pretty easy to come by fishing will be faster with bait but if you have the patience to forgo that and jig with the biggest crockodile they make you will pick up the bigger fish Tinman and I have fished for lakers the last two weekends both on long lake and another up a different highway and caught several 36" fish both trips.
It's alright I'm ok.......Is that my bike on fire?

We drill here and there but eventually settle on a proper spot with proper depth and soak bait on a few tip ups. The it's off to the real work, jigging and jigging some more. They say the muskie is the fish of a thousand casts. The large lakers are the fish of a thousand jigs for sure. I thought I detailed our trip on the fishing reports section for long lake.

Might stop by for some jigging on my way to kill some rabbits. I'll be in a Astro don't know if I will stay long enough to get the quick fish up. If my daughter gets into those little char she may not want to leave.

Fished Long Lake today. Lot's of small stocked char but no lakers. Had a few hits for burbot on set lines but nothing swallowed the bait. What depth of water are people catching fish in on this lake. I fished 10-60 on the north side of the lake. I think I spent nine hours there today and twenty holes. Maybe it was just the weather.

I put our report from yesterday on the "Alaska Reports" section but it sounds like your day went about like our's. I too had a couple tip ups cleaned off by what I hope were burbot but again, no fish to show for it.

I don't know where the lakers went this weekend, I'm not done with this lake yet this year though. Glad to hear others had the same luck we did. This would have been the weekend to take the kids and newbies out for some fast paced action even if it was just messing with the tiny stockers.
