Any one spear legal walleyes?

South Dakoa allows one to legally spear walleyes in designated waters, such as Lake Sharpe and Lake Oahe. I have speared for forty years off and on and have only speared about 25 walleyes in that time period. The set up is slightly different that those tactics for Northern pike.

Believe me when I say that for the time spent, I would have done better with hook and line ice fishing.

Any comments on this target??  ... the old pez

Have about the same amount of time in a darkhouse, wasn't legal in Minnesota, and don't have such things in AK, I can say I have never seen one in the hole, never actually fished for them though while spearing, but never had one even pass by.

I have seen quite a few nice Walleyes swim through when spearing. I have never had one pay any attention to my decoy. I did almost catch one earlier this year with a Chubby Darter while spearing. He came up to the lure like he was going to strike, but  then turned away at the last second. Illegal to spear Walleyes here in MN.

You are allowed to use a bow in SD where spearing is allowed now also.
It seems to go from zero to hero all some have to do is lie.

You can use a spear gun, a spear, bow & arrow or a crossbow. The season on our Missouri river lakes is June 15th to March 1st. Other certain designated  waters are also open also for certain species. No paddle fish or sturgon are allowed.

I have watched many walleyes completely ignore live bait and always ignore artificial decoys. Most of those I've speared were around sundown and were just swimming through. I,ve seldom seen a walleye in less than twelve feet of water. You have about three seconds to make your "shot" before he swims out of range.

My walleye spear is 8 feet long and a bent nail secured to the shaft hooks on the shack floor between my knees and allows the spear to hang down about four feet into the water. I normally aim at the nose and most are hit right behind the gills.

Visibility is tough some years and many times the first thing you see is the white spot on the walleyes tail. A light colored bottum is a big help. Egg shells, sliced potatoes, etc.

The largest one I've taken was an 8 pounder about  2:00 in the afternoon.

Howdy fellow spearers.  Just found this site, first time here.
The first year I speared (about 8-10 years ago), was with the guy who got me started.  He was in another house about 50 yds. away.  Had a big one come in and I missed (threw left handed cause I was talking to him on a walkie with my right.  The water wasn't real clear so wasn't real sure what it was.  Anyway by that time I had the spear back out of the hole and here it comes again.  I threw down the radio and threw righty and drilled it right behind the gills.  13lb.14 oz wally.  I go to hollering, buddy runs over for a look, eyes big as saucers.  He goes to swearing something about doing this for 15 years, not caring if he ever speared another northern if he could just get a crack at a walleye like that.  Needless to say I found my number two passion (after traditional archery) that day.  Had to put that one on the wall.

thanks, seems like a right friendly place.  But I guess people that stare down ice holes for hours at a time either go crazy or get really mellow, huh. LOL  Seriously, I've only been hanging around for a couple days and have picked up some real good info., can't wait to get out and try it out.
