linwood today. fun and scary
« on: Feb 06, 2009, 08:56 PM »
went out of linwood rd today. fished any where between 16 and 21 ft. seen at least 20 walleye on the camera and could not get them to hit anything. spoons raps, jig heads, aplain treable hook and minnow nothing. i was so frustrated, but had a great time. cousin did manage to get a 4 lb whitefish. at about 12.00 or so a 4 ft crack opened up out past us the tremor was felt all the way to thomas rd. my shanty moved a foot and shook violently. the aquavu was swaying back and forth. it felt like an earthquack. scared the crap out of alot of guys out there today includeing myself. never felt anything like it on the ice before.

Ya. we were fishing at Selfridge AFB on Lk St Clair and we felt it also. We could see and feel the ice move. Someone who works at the base said that there was a small earthquake.

I work with a little seismology and also collaborate with a research seismologist  and we were just talking yesterday how much a frozen lake acts just like plate tectonics and earthquakes. Always thought it would be fun to take my research quality seismometer out onto the lake at night and let it have some fun. Then again, I don't want to lose about $4000 in a lake either.

WELL MAYBE THAT IS WHAT CAUSED THE ICE TO BREAK AND STRAND 200 FISHERMAN OFF OF BREST BAY TODAY!  BUT ONE THING FOR SURE THE WIND WAS WRONG TO BE ON THE BAY TODAY, IT WAS BLOWNING STRAIGHT OUT.

3 of us went saturday and i was real uncomfortable!Got out there and setup at daylight and there was a bad current,my line was on an angle! Then when the wind changed direction in the afternoon,it about flipped are shanties and the current under the ice changed direction!I had my limit +1 by 4pm( i donated to my bro's limit,he had only caught one)we left about 6pm and snow was gone and 6-8 inches of water in some spots.Everything went good, but i just had a weird feeling all day!

What are your conditions up in Saginaw bay like now??? Are you going to be able to survive the warm up and still fish the ice?? Been there in the summer but never fished the ice and was thinking about making a road trip.
