Rather than seeing the whole water column you can zoom (depending on the model) some just the bottom and some different parts of the water column ... you get a close up of the selected area , more defined to detect the fish better.
Just passing time until spring Stripers !

For example my Marcum's zoom (it's optional not an automatic lock) will show the bottom 5' no matter what depth your in. Sometimes if the fish are tight to the bottom it helps see them.

My Marcum has an adjustable zoom so I can focus on different sections of the water column. This feature is sweet cause it changes the target (fish ) separation from 2.5" to 1" The zoomed in section of water shows on the left side of the screen. Good luck. Cheeks out!!! 8)

I'm not trying to start a which fish finder is better war here, but there is also a demo on the Lowrance website that you can download and play with all the features that you would if you really had one.

Here's the zoom feature in a Lowrance. Vexilar or Marcum can't zoom in this tight, not even close! The picture is from a camera phone so it's not the best quality, but you'll get the point.

you guys claim the lowrance has the best zoom, so my question is what does it have as far as target separation because that is what counts. also as stated the marcum lx3 has 1" target separation and the lx5 has 3/4". i just checked the lowrance web site and i could find nothing on target separation. yes i own a marcum, i have a lowrance gps and love it, would i sell my marcum to buy a lowrance, nope.

Also, that Lowrance looks like a regular fish finder, not a flasher. Cheeks out!!! 8)

Almost right.  The Lowrance ice machines have both options built in, graph or flasher......you get tired of looking at one mode you switch to the other.

FL8se = 525 lines of vertical resolution FIXED on any and ALL ranges , divided into the number of feet.

For S&G we'll use 30 FOW
525 lines / 30 fow = 17.5 lines per foot.

M68/X67 has 320 vertical lines (standard 4X zoom = 320 X 4 = 1280 lines)

1280 / 30 fow = 42.67 lines per foot on a 30' range (which will vary on either unit but can be divided on down with a more powerful computer - and they BOTH have computers in them).

IF you go to a 1.5 foot range (Lowrance) (18") you have 320/1.5 = 213 lines of resolution per foot viewed onscreen.

Let's break it down in lines per inch of water a 30'.
Lowrance = 18 lines per inch of water
Vex = 1.5 lines per inch of water

Its easy to see the Lowrance has better target separation and resolution.
