Holdin the shanty down.
« on: Feb 19, 2009, 10:14 PM »
I know it is late(11:!5pm to b exact) but just looked at the wind and im going out tomorrow so i figured its time for the shanty.  i have only used it 3 times this year.  It is the Shapell 3000.  It ddn't come iwth stakes and with no snow on the ice i can see myself sliding across the lake!  last times i have put some wood in there and was with a buddy of mine so there was a good 350lbs in there.  this time with only me we only have 155.  any ideas?

ps. no wood this time

but some landscape timber spikes at your local lumber yard and  use some rope , it will work  work. pound the spikes in at an angle with the head into the wind. use a spring if you can.

Get two pieces of strapping wood, 2" by 3"s, or even a couple of thick branches. Cut each piece about 15" long.
Get 2 pieces of rope ,each about five feet long,so you can tie to your shanty.
Tie the two pieces of rope to your shanty on one end and on the other end  of the rope tie your piece of wood on each piece of rope. Drill two auger holes three to four feet apart. Wedge the wood down the auger holes under the ice. Use your skimmer.
Make sure your rope tie downs are upwind from your shanty. It won't go anywhere. Even if your out of it.
I'm telling you to use 15" lengths of wood assuming you might have a 10" auger. They can be shorter lengths as long as they wedge accross the bottom of the hole under the ice.
Good Luck

I have a Shapple 3000 too.  When I'm fishin alone I drill a hole on both sides of the floor/door divider inside(in the middle between the trap doors). Then I bring a wire coat hanger to "thread" the rope down one hole and over and up the other hole.  Then finish off with a couple of tight overhand knots. Presto!!! no wood, no hammer, no spikes/stakes to carry.  You can fish these holes too!!!  I

usally try to face the side with the holes into the wind on 45 degree angle.  this keeps the back from lifting, but the trap doors like to close with the wind pushing the fabric.  I just use my ice scopers to hold them up.

I had the same problem....Bought a Shapell...First time out it blew away....Why sell you something you can't use in the wind?  Went to Fish307 website and got some long screwin spikes...Stake down all 4 corners... Last time out I couldn't find them...Packed snow all around and poured water on it...Froze up solid...Enough to keep it in place. Good luck!

The shanty I have has a hole in each corner for lag bolts, which I just bought at a hardware store fo less than 2 bucks each. You could probally do the same thing for yours just drill a hole in each corner and use a washer and a 7" lag screw. Promblem solved.

1.  Drill hole in ice.
2.  Take scoop.
3. Tie shanty rope to middle of scoop.
4.  Push scoop down the hole.
5.  Turn it so it goes across hole and pull tight.
6.  Push shanty with wind until pull rope it tight and ur done.

I have an otter village 6x12  great big wind sail  what I have done is 1 leave it attached to the snowmobile  2. with the sled facing the wind attach  these awning wind deflappers  to the fabric of the shack  to the snowmobile or a hole in the ice    and if it gets really bad  I put eye bolts at the top of the conduit just before the bend in the top of the shack and cross tie them to the eye bold I but near the base of the shack   keeps it steady in 45 mph gusts!

I have the 3000 series shappell also. I used a 16 inch piece of pvc with a hole in the center and one end. tie a rope from the center hole to the pull string of the shack and tie a rope to the hole in the end. drill a hole in the ice and trow the anchor down and then you are good. I used scrap pvc from my house and clothesline.

Same here, love my hut.

I just use an eye hook, about 6 inches long. Screw it into the ice, take the pull cord that is built in the hut and wrap around it. takes 10 seconds and do and will never move on you. 6 inch eye hook is all you need from Home Depot, cost 99 cents
