Gull lake?
« on: Jan 21, 2009, 12:02 PM »
Anyone have an update on the ice/slush conditions on the North side of Gull lake?  I was hoping to head out with my Son this Friday night for some Smelt fishing.

Thanks in advance.

I'm not sure about the north side, but on the southwest side there was a lot of snow and slush last weekend.

I'm sure I'll be there...probably the south side of the island.  Green Eskimo flip over shanty.

Well  we got the poles rigged with hali's and we are going to give Gull a try tonight, come heck or high water/slush  :)

My Son and I were out on Austin this past weekend, pulling much less gear than we will have tonight. Austin, in places must have had 10" of slush on top of 10" of ice UGGH.

Thanks for the replies, will post Saturday.

Note, this is a copy of my other post,I type too slowly to do it all over again....

My Son and I were at the South end last night we parked along the road (D Ave) in front of Franklin's Marina.  This was our first venture to the South end, we have always fished the North, but there was rumors the ice up North was not safe?  There were lot's of fishermen out there with us, the Smelt were there too, most of the fish came 8-12 feet down in 60 fow.  Hali's with white spikes worked best for us, plenty of bites and some smelt in the bucket made for some good father son time.  The bite seemed to be picking up about the time we left (around 11:00).  There was plenty of ice where we were 8-10", and the Slush was no longer an issue.

Hope this helps.....Good luck to all.

safe ice near the bible conference area. also alot of slush. found a spot last nite when i went out looking for a few perch that had almost a foot of ice, but i could push the auger throu it with out even turning the handle.
needless to say we back off that spot really fast and carefull. the slush was about 3" deep in most spots and if you broke throu the crust that was there. then it was about 6" deep.

southeast side of the lake. not far from the bird santuary[sp] or the msu bio station.
