Vert jigging lakers. Bait choice, hook placement?
« on: Jan 22, 2009, 12:36 AM »
Yes, me again.  Never jigged much for lakers (anything) before, leaned on tip-ups.  Could be why I do so poorly.  SO, eliminating SUCK variables, I'm going to jig like a mo-fo over the next couple days near my cusk string.  Procured a small variety of Bionic Bucktails, Rapala jigging Raps and Pimples - ranging from one half to one ounce.  Now, as for tipping them off with the real thing... the bucktails are equipped with a treble stinger.  Bait the main hook, or the trailing treble?  Are the rapala's too delicate to be tipped off? Wll it trash their "circle" action? And then center treble, or rear single hook?  Pimples seem self-explanatory.  Sucker meats? smelts?  How much is too much?

I don't do much laker fishing but here is a quote out of the fishing digest, before you get checked by a CO. All the jigging I have done has always been with cut sucker on a Swedish pimple, a small fillet on the hook.
Quote
Hooks used for bait while ice fishing must have only a single hook with a single hook point, per ice fishing device. From April 1 to ice-in, two hooks may be used for bait per line, one with a single hook point and the other with no more than three hook points.

Oh god no, not this road again.  Even pimples come with a treb hook, must I switch it out with a single if I intend to add cut bait?  The rapala's are useless altogether?  Strip stinger from buck-tail?  Or just can't tip them off with "stuff" ?  Holy Christ! they should set up a store with NH reg friendly gear alone, call it Dantes 7th Circle of Angling Hell.

I see no issue with the lure except you can not attach bait to it while ice fishing, and you would not be able to use it in a body of water restricted to "single hook artificial lures".

Oh god no, not this road again.

lol, I feel ya. When I first started ice fishing I was a mess trying to figure out some of the laws.

Even pimples come with a treb hook, must I switch it out with a single if I intend to add cut bait?

Yep, all the pimples I buy in NH come with a singe hook in the package.

The rapala's are useless altogether?  Strip stinger from buck-tail?  Or just can't tip them off with "stuff" ?

just can't tip them off with "stuff"

If I were going to refer to a F&G email, I would use one a little more current than 3 year old email from a now retired CO. Regs change to often.

If your pimple doesn't come with a single hook you can mail them the upc and they will send you out a single hook. Use to be they came with both but not so anymore. I usually send them a bunch of upc's at once and get double the hooks I need back. Works for me.

If you have read any of my threads over the past few weeks you will know that I am totally new to Ice Fishing. I have been out to Winni 2 times in the past 3 weeks and exclusively used AJ's Jigs. With those I have caught 5 lakers so far. I havent tried the pimples but I have heard from Adrien that they do work. I will tell you though, I am not spending $1 on any of them until those AJ Jigs start failing me. I take a piece of sucker meat and hang it off of that and it has worked great!

I have had my best luck with pimples tipped with any small minnow hooked through the mouth.  Seems the blue/white pimples work nicely. Drop it to the bottom and jig it up to about 30 feet off the bottom and repeat.  I usually fish in about 140' FOW.

I also used to use tip-ups only and had marginal luck at best, since I started jigging the action on the tipups has increased too, could be a coincidence but I aint complaining.

Talk about differences between states and fishing laws, in NY we are allowed to have 15 hook points per device, not sure what has 5 treble hooks but I bet it's not fun to get out of a fish's mouth

I have tried to catch togue on a swedish pimple for 30 something years with all known bait and jigging methods, and have caught nothing for my effort.
This is no joke, i actualy had my first bite from a lake trout last week and missed him.
I must be some sort of Jigging Jonah lol.

you dont want to fish a pimple anyway. i've only ever gotten one on a pimple, and i was reeling it up really fast when he hit. try a bucktail cut a fillet off of your sucker about and inch and a half or two long and split it down the middle about 2/3 the way up and hook it through the 1/3 part where the shin is intact. this will give the sucker action and make it flutter when it is jigged.
