Tip Up Leader
« on: Jan 28, 2009, 11:46 AM »

What do you use for a leader on your tip-ups.  I was using 4 puond mono, but that has not been working (fish bit right through it - probably a pickeral).

I know I should go heavier, but concerned about fish bweing line-shy - or is that not an issue?

Thanks,

Russ

I'm up to 25lb flourocarbon, I got tired of bite-offs too (even on 16lb flouro).

We are generally fishing for bass or pickeral on the tip-ups.

We also jig for whatever will bite.

I believe so, I think we give fish too much credit for being "smart".

I use 14# fluorocarbon as a leader(about6 feet) attached to a #1 ball bearing swivel. I do have an occasional break off and I am sure they are pickerel. I fish for the same stuff. Hope that helps

i use 10lb attached to 30lb tip up line by swivle and have never broke.  i fish for northern and walley and bass.  then i got lazy and i just tied the hook straight to the tip up line on a new one i got and they still hit it so i see no difference

I use 25lb floro as well.....not the easiest thing in the world to tie with cold hands though. Just bring a pliers to hold the hook as you tighten the knot and something like nail clippers to cut the line...

25lb braid stays nice and limp in cold weather and you don't need a leader. I have'nt had a bite off yet!!!!!!!!!!

i use a 25 lb lo vis green fire line. seems to do the trick also. dont need much of a leader. bass and pike arent the sharpest tools in the tool shed.  ;)
