Soft plastics melting?
« on: Dec 23, 2009, 10:24 AM »
I recently bought some Northland Bloodworms and Slug-Bugs, unpackaged them and put them all in my jig box. I keep thinking that I'm going to open up my jig box one day and see them melted together. Does anyone have any tips on how to store them... do they need to be seperated or can I put them in the same compartment without worrying about them melting?

Hasn't happend to me yet.  They're all tossed together in a plano plastic container.  The plano plastic doesn't react with those soft plastic to cause them to meld together.

I have had it happen in the past with some plastics but it is usually not a quick thing. Usually notice it after getting stuff out from the previous season. Not sure what causes it though.

I believe heat is the cause. The box acts like a oven and bakes the plastics.

That makes sense.. for some reason I thought that there was some kind of chemical reaction between the soft plastic jigs and the tackle box over time, but heat makes more sense.

I believe heat is the cause. The box acts like a oven and bakes the plastics.

last time i noticed it was in a box that had been in my basement for over a year. even in the summer my basement does not get hotter than about 70.

My thought is that every time I get plastics they have a coating of somekind of oil/greasy substance on them. I'm thinking that that may react with the plastics of the box some how. Seems to me that the ones that are in contact with the box (not with each other) seem to be worse.

Just a thought

Chemical reaction is the first culprit.  Even two different kinds of plastics may react with each other.  Never mix different brands, or flavors... ;D

Thats just worm oil, a coating to keep them from sticking to each other.

I've got around 7000 plastics that I have made in my garage, both in bags and boxes, and none of them have started melting. Just another reason to buy hand made plastics!

Would bet on a reaction. Didn't say the age of the box. Up until recently the advertising would claim worm proof (or similar) for tackle boxes/containers. Lately there are very few problems with new ones plastic technology, some of the old golden planos were a nightmare with some plastics
