fluorocarbon question
« on: Nov 29, 2014, 12:39 PM »
Hey all, getting ready for the hardwater like most of you probably are.  I have no experience with using fluorocarbon at all and my question is:  Can fluoro be used straight to a spinning reel for jigging?  or do you guys use like Mono or braid for backing and just use Fluoro for leader on your spinning jig reels.  what do you guys do? I usually have just used straight mono in the past with no problems but I wanted to try something different this year as alot of people say fluoro outfishes mono through the ice (more sensitive, abrasion resistance, less visible & sinks faster)

thanks..

straight floro but braid with a floro leader works nice as well.  Only problem I have had with the braid/floro combo is the braid ices up bad when its real cold.

How deep are you fishing ?
I don't think you will catch more with fluoro.
You would have to fish side by side with 2 lines and maybe with a camera down there...maybe somebody has done this.
I think the lure or bait is more important.

Fishmore can catch them on rope. If you have trouble catching fish just put your pole in his hands.

For jig pole I use a little mono backing with ice braid as the main line, and a fluorocarbon leader tied right on. On my traps I put about a 5 ft. fluoro leader on em.

I use straight flouro on all my jig rods . I couldn't tell you that it outfishes any other set up but I can tell you it works for me ! It doesn't stretch like mono , so a piece of electrical tape around the spool before you put the line on , gives it something to bite! For the same reason , I use a palomar knot to tie my jigs on.

thanks, do you use an arbor knot to tie it to the spool? and would a clinch or improved clinch knot work in place of a palomar knot?

You WILL catch more with the flouro, invisible under water.  I used mono for years and switched to flouro about 10 yrs ago and catch a lot more with it!!  Guys I fish with used to catch at same rate, switched and didn't tell them and they were wondering why I caught more fishing as we always did.  Had to tell them, they switched and could not believe the difference!!

I do use the arbor knot to tie it to the spool and I use the improved clinch to attach the line to the jig/hook

I do use an arbor not to tie to the spool however both clinch and improved clinch hold better with line that stretches like mono...palomar is a better knot for line that does not stretch...and dont forget as with any knot a little spit goes a long way!
