Actually tulibee are not garbage fish, they are a very important part of the food chain and anyone who leaves them out on the ice insteadof releasing them is a couple of bricks short of a load.
I'll also agree with this.I see burbot on the ice sometimes too. Just because you can't (or in the case of burbot, won't) eat a fish doesn't make it "garbage". The exceptions may be non-native species like carp. . . but that's for another thread . . .
What they said.
I think most people see burbot as a "garbage fish" is that they don't know what to do with them! I wonder if those people know that they are wasting one of the best eating fish that swims in this province. It has thick, white, flakey meat and makes fantastic fish and chips...can't go wrong with freshwater cod! Too bad that people here have given them such an undeserved bad wrap.
I agree, tullibee's also called ciscos are a great little fish when you want to just have the fun of fishing. They are usually biting and are fairly scrappy little guys when hooked. For me as long as something is biting for me it's all good. I don't understand folks who leave the fish on the ice. If you aren't going to keep for some purpose, let it go. I can remember before there was a limit on burbot, they use to litter the ice of LML. I always though it was such a waste since they are such good eating fish. I also remember hearing about a farmer who use to collect the burbot each day to feed the pigs. At least they were used for something. Good luck with your first Sask. pike Fishin32. LML has some big girls in it. WW
