quick queston
« on: Jan 14, 2009, 10:20 PM »
I was out on last mountain this weekend, just in front of regina beach boat launch (not so much luck, the GF was stealing all the fish) but i noticed a ton of fish scattered on the ice, i wasn't sure what kind the were, but they were really white (it kinda made me think they were whitefish just based on that, but i haven't ever seen one in the flesh).  Anyways, there must have been 15-20 just scattered around in a 20 foot radius--just kinda got me curious. can anyone tell me what kind of fish they might be-- or why they someone would just leave em.

suppose to be nice out this weekend, i'll be out. if anyone is looking for a fishing buddy, just drop me a msg

I'd agree, prolly ciscos or tullibee.  They are a baitfish species related closely to the whitefish.

Actually tulibee are not garbage fish, they are a very important part
of the food chain and anyone who leaves them out on the ice instead
of releasing them is a couple of bricks short of a load.

well they look pretty close to white fish to me...dont they call them lake mountain fish? anyway they can be a pain in the ass for me when fishing for perch and such but one thing about them if you want to take a first timer out thats never caught a fish they'll be happier then hell to catch them none stop and i agree with togo

Love 'em or hate 'em, Togo is right!  You may think them a "garbage fish", but without them you wouldn't get the huge pike that everyone loves to catch out at Last Mountain.  My question is why would you not put them back into the lake?? All you are really doing by leaving them on the ice is hurting your own fishery.  In my opinion, there is no such thing as a "garbage fish" because they all play a vital role in the lake ecosystem...next time, please put them back down the hole.

I think somewhere in anglers guide, it is illegal to leave them on the ice. If they are a problem when fishing, use a heavier jig to get to bottom quicker so they don't follow your jig down. They do make good compost addition if you keey them and can store till spring. I do try to take a few home for the cats, have to thaw and axe up so they can enjoy.

You should have picked them up. They are good bait for pike.

I'll also agree with this.
I see burbot on the ice sometimes too.  Just because you can't (or in the case of burbot, won't) eat a fish doesn't make it "garbage".  The exceptions may be non-native species like carp. . . but that's for another thread . . .

next time i'll be sure to grab em for pike bait--still chasing my first SK pike--seems like the more i want to catch one through the ice, the harder its gonna be for me--murphy's law i guess

I agree, tullibee's also called ciscos are a great little fish when you want to just have the fun of fishing.
They are usually biting and are fairly scrappy little guys when hooked.
For me as long as something is biting for me it's all good. :)

I don't understand folks who leave the fish on the ice.
If you aren't going to keep for some purpose, let it go.
I can remember before there was a limit on burbot, they use to litter the ice of LML. I always though it was such a waste since they are such good eating fish.

I also remember hearing about a farmer who use to collect the burbot each day to feed the pigs. At least they were used for something. :P

Good luck with your first Sask. pike Fishin32.
LML has some big girls in it. :)

I think most people see burbot as a "garbage fish" is that they don't know what to do with them!  I wonder if those people know that they are wasting one of the best eating fish that swims in this province.  It has thick, white, flakey meat and makes fantastic fish and chips...can't go wrong with freshwater cod!  Too bad that people here have given them such an undeserved bad wrap.  :-[

Caught the first burbot of my life this past weekend and couldn't wait to eat it.  It was decent eating.  A lot of fun to catch though!  I can't wait to catch more.  I hear that burbot fishing should really heat up in a month or so.  I'm looking forward to it.

Burbot is the closest thing to cod we get out here.  in fact they are related... burbot... the fresh water cod. Delicious and easy to clean.
