woods pond info
« on: Jan 08, 2009, 06:36 PM »
I am from central mass, fished the river feeding woods this summer, and caught some nice fish, Is there any one out there who might like to share some information on woods pond, would love to drop some tilts in there. not asking for peoples hot spots, just some basic info, like how good does it freeze, bait stores in the area, has anyone pulled any monsters out of  there.

Woods Pond is an awesome pike watershed.  If you look around on other posts, in the Mass General you'll find photos of huge pike from there.

It is not large enough to support a large pike population with heavy fishing pressure.  If people keep fishing it hard, the big pike will die back. Pike in the 3 pound range are very common, with 8-10 pounders very likely, and 12-14 pound pike on a good day.  Large Tiger muskie have been caught there. Perch, bass, and crappie can be caught. Don't eat fish cause of PCBS and heavy metals.

Fish in the middle of the pond part, everything else will be shallow, and dangerous cause of the current.

Please Catch and Release, a photo is good.

Thanks for the info, I will catch and release, if I hook up... had some good luck fishing the river over the summer, caught some big ones, had tandem 7 plus pound hook ups, I had one in the front of the canoe and my son had one at the back of the canoe.

I was really impressed when I went there over the summer, we had a great day, caught a lot of fish.
So sounds like it would be worth the ride out there, it is a drive from where I live, but I had a good day when I went, and was wondering how the place was under the ice, from the responses, and PM's I will put it on the list, for the ice fishing season, and all I catch will go back in the hole. thanks for the info guys...

I always hear about how good it is for pike.  But almost as much i hear about how it can be a bit dangerous in the early season due to the currents.  I have a lot of buddies that love hitting woods in the summer.

I talked to a few locals and they said you have to be careful on the ice there, I have never fished there on the ice but really want to give it a shot, where do you park during the winter, I have only parked upstream at decker  canoe ramp.

I'm with ya.....Catch and release, picture is good enough for me....some people like to keep em and that is what it is....but if the majority catches and releases the future will be bright for budding super stars like the "littlest pike fisherman" back then I was happy to get a largie.....

I mean don't get me wrong.  You catch a nice fish and plan on putting it on the wall cause it is a trophy in your eyes then that is great in my opinion.  I for one don't catch the 6,8,10 lb fish and plan on eating them.  Take a look at the NY site.  They keep a ton there, but then again....it is a totally different fishery over there.  Many more lakes have pike in them than we do here in MA.  Thats why I always have a camera on me so if either myself or a buddy catches a nice fish we can snap a quick picture and down the hole she goes.

No one should plan on eating anything from the lakes anymore.  They just have too much mercury in them.  I honestly think it is a blessing in disguise as it keep the populations up.

Trying to get to your flags quickly is also important to prevent gut hooking a fish.

I see all these monster pike and muskie pictures posted here, and I have got to catch one of them.
I have fished for most of my kid and adult life, ice and open water, and have never really fished for pike on hard water
need to set this year, as one of my goals to put some pike time in.
Thanks for the all the info guys....

C & R, I'll drink to that!  A camera makes it all good.

We all want to catch a BIG toothy critter.  I hope it happens at the gathering.
