Hey JT, Don't pay no nevermind to ole Tom there. He's a bit grumpy :%$#!: about almost getting his tip-ups run over on Dumore. Wait 'til he moves to Alaska and they get run over by a tundra bus  :woot:!

But anyway, to answer your question (HERE...in the Vermont section ;) ) If your already set up with an light or ultralite action rod I suggest 2 or 3 # test ice line w/ a 1 or 2# fluorocarbon leader to start.
Add a line clip to that to make it easier to change out jigs. There are several jigs to choose from Dockside Bait & Tackle has a fair selection and I believe they sell the JT lures panfish starter pack as well. That will give you a good choice in a range of sizes. You can tip these w/ spikes, waxworms, mousses, mealworm euro-larva (colored spikes) or minnows . I personally like spikes and waxworms. You can use a leaded clip
(sounder) to figure your depth. Once that established you generally want to bring up about 6" off the bottom (keeping the eye of your rod right to the hole) Bring your line back up to the top of your hole and very slowly start a "drop discent" giving 5 or 6 vigorous jigs every 10" of drop. That's drop without jigging for 10" then jig while in drop, then continue drop w/o jigging 10" , jig repeat. You may have to slow down or speed up your discent. Once you reach bottom jig a few times, stop for at least 4 seconds, jig again. Do this a few times then start your accent. Your looking for actively feeding fish. If you don't get reaction say in 5 to 10 minutes in any one hole then move, move. move ! Talk to other fishermen around you about there techniques, especially the ones catching fish ! What I've outlined here is just a fraction of methods and technique but it will get you started ! Good luck JT !!

For perch I like an ultralight spinning rod with 4 to 6 lb test. I rig a small bell sinker on the end of the line or a heavy bibbet, swedish pimple, then above that a foot or two I thread a smaller bibbet on the line. I bait both lures with spike, maggot, minnow. I start just off the bottom and work up, light jigging.

For sunnies or weedier shallow areas I like a lighter setup with a spring bobber attached to my jigstick and running two jigs similar to above, but lighter so I can see the action on the spring bobber. I'll move this up and down through weedbeds until I find where the fish are and jig lightly or just leave it alone.

use a small Swedish pimple(one with some red in it) and cut an eye ball out of the first sunny u get(be carefull not to pop it), it really make then hit it.  other than that motorfisher broke it down for you.

Hey Bass4Me, Hali's are a great jig ! Tip w/ a few spikes and your in business ! Just consider going w/ a smaller jig if those fish are being finicky and like I say " It never hurts to ask the guys who's catchin' fish how he's doin' it !  ;)2 "
