Somewhere on here I read a guy made his own out of an aluminum can.

Found it, http://www.iceshanty.com/ice_fishing/index.php?topic=74737.msg733324#msg733324

When I use to fish with that type of auger   :cookoo:  a long long long time ago. I also made my own   :flex:  out of an aluminum fence tie that I smashed with a hammer to the desired thickness  8).

I've heard that these shims are triangular but I was wondering can they also be round like a realy thin washer??

The ones that came with my blades were rectangular about 2" long, 1/4" wide and .015/.020 thick.  You could probably cut some out of sheet metal or band iron.

Get a new auger, they seem to have issues.  I could never get the shims to work

Yeah, is there some sort of shim famine? I always lose them and need more. Usually they're at Gander or wherever blades are sold. This year, I couldn't find them anywhere.

I'll be cussin' this weekend with the ice getting thick.

What do the shims do anyway? I have had all the brands of hand augers and don't think I have ever seen them. My Nils definately don't have any shims.

I always keep a spare set of blades with me in case I hit some dirty or sandy ice. I thought the shims were supposed to be used in softer or slushie ice conditions.
