gps with a lakemasters chip
« on: Jan 05, 2009, 10:15 AM »
As I am sure a lot of you do the same, I use the lake map book to find a few sweet spots on the ice.  Since they pinpoint the sunken islands and tell you deapths and all that noise,  it makes it pretty easy to locate hotspots.  Has any one used the lakemasters chip in their gps.  It is supposed to give you accuracy by the foot.  I never used one(nor a gps) and was looking for some input with the chip users out there.

I've never heard of either one. Do you have a web address for these? I'd be interested in using them

I have heard rave reviews from fellas that use these devices on the great expanses of Saginaw Bay and Lake Erie. Almost inpossible to find specific structure and contour three to seven miles off shore without it. They love them to death!! Puts you right ontop of a sunken christmas tree, rock pile or drop-off. The blow-up maps are suppose to be easy to read and very accurate. I cannot tell you this from first hand knowledge, only from what I have heard. But this is the next piece of equipment I get!! ;)

Like Wrangler said they are really nice on large lakes where it's hard to pinpoint structure below.
My buddy has one and won't leave home wit out it. We have been using it to locate humps on Winnebago when your 1-3 miles out. Also handy for maeking the launch incase some nasty weather comes through. It's more useful on larger bodies IMO.

What brand of gps do you recommend? I have been looking at the lowrance ifinder h2o. Is this compatible with the lakemasters chip?

Thanks for the info. Will be buying both soon. Do they really show detailed structure like sunken islands or boats?

my lakemaster chip shows ship wrecks, piles, structure, the one i own has 1'-3' contour lines you can't ask for much more than that. i fish the bay of green bay so i bought the specific chip for it, my buddy has the wisconsin chip and his is not as detailed as mine on the bay. so if you mainly fish a particular area check locally if you have any sporting goods stores nearby because they may have something to suite you better than you will find online.

scroll down they give some samples you can click on, the samples don't seem as detailed as i have but worth checking out.
