Big Lake Burbot
« on: Jan 07, 2009, 01:41 AM »
Seeing how I live a few minutes a way from Big Lake, I would like to give it a try and target some burbot.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  I'm not looking for your secret spot and you don't have to tell me any of your secret weapons, just a few pointers would be good.  Thanks in advance!!

It seems like people are pretty stingy with their burbot holes.  I haven't had any luck with burbot out there, this year, or ever.  I've always attributed my personal lack of success to not being out there at night. I've only seen one burbot on my camera at big lake this year, and that was in 40 feet of water, in that bay where Call of the Wild used to be.  The bottom was really silty back in that bay.  The area I usually fish around burnt point is all sand, gravel, and barrels.  :-\ I haven't seen one burbot there, yet.   I was thinking that maybe a good spot to try would be back in the weedy bays, right off of the weedlines, maybe as shallow as 4 or 5 feet.  There's also a hump between crocker and burston Islands that goes from 60 ft. up to 20'.   I've never seen anyone fishing it, and it seems like there would have to be some nice burbot and char that move up and around that hump when they feed.  That's probably where I'm going to try this weekend.

The fish and game web site has depth maps of most lakes you just have to search for them.

The map that you need is at wal-mart and its called Pt. Mckenzie/Big Lake.  It shows alot more structure than the fish and game bathymetric maps.

I don't know what you guys are talking about big lake is full of burbot we get one or more every time we go out got two on saterday. I'll post pics soon. Just remember they grow so slow and only the big boys are spawners so let some go. If you want to start catching them read up on their spawning habbits. peace!!
