Whats your favorite ice fishing reel?
« on: Jan 09, 2009, 03:29 PM »
Hey guys.  For years I have been using little plastic sideways reels because I am usually fishing shallow water and the reel is more of a line holder then anything else.  Now I have started fishing a lot of deeper water/different presentations and am looking to put some actual reels on my fishing rods.  I started trying the trigger spin zebcos (#11 I think) because I had some of those on hand.   Tehy perform well and have nice drags, but once I am on the ice the line seems to coil real bad on me.  I use 2 lb Hi-vis gold stren and love it and it usually doesn't coil at all.  Is it because of the design of this style reel Im getting so much coil do you think?   Also......what is your favorite ice reel?  Thanks for any info!  Tight Lines and Scramin Drags to Ya!!!!!!

Started with the cheapy Shakespeare ultralite (complete freeze up), then went to the AG cardinal C300 (one works great the other ones bail freezes open) but have now switched to the Mitchell 310XGE (no problems so far).  Have also have 2 Gentz rod/reel combos that have worked well.

I bought the smallest guide series reel from Gander Mountain. Haven't had any trouble with it so far. I also have a couple real cheapies, they work but I don't like the way the gears feel in them lots of grinding, and yes i lube them up regularly.  Just my two cents

Tica SB 500---- The more I use it the more I like. Really smooth drag and that's important especially for the Pike or salmon.

Tica Cetus SS,SB,but actually any Cetus is a great reel to have. Shimano has come out with more 500 models this year however.

I have several Pfluegar Trions XS series.  Excellent drags and just one sweet reel, heck I even have a Trion baitcaster for soft water fishing....... They're a little more pricer than I like but after using them I'm changing all 7 of my ice rods over to them.........

I have one mounted on my Ice Blues 30 inch UL and loaded with 1 lb Fireline crystal.....man what a awesome rig, no spring bobber even needed.

I have several ABU baitcasters in 5000, 6000 and 7000 series as well as a couple of Quantum PTI spinning reels. They all work well after putting low temp lubes in them.

Usually no reel at all for me. Got a stick with some line on it and do it the old fashioned way. I've hand lined perch and walleye but then again I'm usually in 20 fow. I have a couple rods with reels and I'm about to get some better ones as the ones I have are junk

I like the Pinnacle's and Shakespear's. Very smooth drag and instant anti-reverse.
