Pictures of homemade tip up
« on: Jan 11, 2012, 02:53 PM »
Here is a tip up that I built recently, it may have ended up more as art than a tip up but once the finish on it compleatly drys I do plan to actually use it(when it is not in use it will be hung on the wall to show off.

And here are some pictures of a tip down that I made and have tested

The first picture shows it all set up (but without line on it yet)
The second picture shows it open with  the two separate rods that fist inside it (each rod can be set up to target a different type of fish and can easily be swapped out)
The last picture shows the box closed with both poles inside.

I plan to make a couple dozen of the tipdowns because they are very easy to make and there are several people in the area who have shown an interest in buying them if I ever decide to make them for sale.

That tip down is a work of art.   Very cool.

Nice work! What kind of wood did you use?

The tip up body is hickory with a birch real and the inlays are walnut.  The tipdown is birch with the balance pin being copper wire.  If I do make more of the tipdowns I plan to dress them up a bit more maybe with an inlay or engrave the directions on the cover.

I like it. Do you have a laser echer, or a small wood carving machine?  I've seen one similar in a bait shop in Auburn Maine.  All made from wood from a local guy, he had also built a wooden case to hold his set of five traps, and a small drawer for inside to hole odds and ends.  It was a sweet set up.

Yeah, I have a laser on the tip up I used it to cut all the small bits and pieces and the inlays but not the body of it.  On the tipdown the laser did all the cutting and all I had to do was glue it together and varnish is.

Nice!

I would hang them on my wall as well.

You  need the tip up Pic for your avatar.

I relly like the simplistic look of your tip downs ! I make musical insts. ,and have some exotic wood scraps left over. Would you use these for pike? or just pannies? and if for pike, I am confused as to how the line would go on. nice job

I have caught northern on the tip downs before but they are more for targeting crappies and walleyes they can be balanced by putting the pin through a different hole so you can see every move that your minnow makes and the tiniest bites.  When a northern takes it if you don't get to it quick enough the line will snap and the whole think will slingshot  back at the little kid standing behind it and hit him in the face (had that happen once)
