ATV's in VT
« on: Dec 24, 2008, 10:49 AM »
I've been trying without any luck to find the rules and or regulations for using an ATV on the ice.  Could or would someone please point me in the right direction?  Thank you in advance for any and all help!

There are no rules for driving ATV's on Champlain. Your allowed to ride anywhere you'd like. On other lakes, im not sure of since each lake has its own individual laws.

There are certain lakes that you cant use motorized equipment, so i'd imagine your not allowed to dive on those.

Vermont ATV registrations (limited use off-highway plates) are valid for a period of one (1) year.

Residents must annually register ATV's owned or leased for a period of more than thirty days and operated by them, unless currently registered in Vermont. It is illegal for a person to operate an ATV unless the ATV is registered. A "Resident" is any legal resident of this state and any person who accepts employment or engages in a trade, profession or occupation in this state for a period of at least six months (except a person who lives in another state and who returns to that state on a regular basis ---not less than weekly). Also any foreign partnership, firm, association or corporation having a place of business in this state is considered to be a resident with regard to all vehicles owned or leased and which are garaged or maintained in this state.

ATV's may be registered at the Vermont DMV main office (in Montpelier) and certain registration transactions may be performed at our satellite offices (see "DMV OFFICE LOCATIONS/HOURS/SERVICES").

§ 3502. Registration

(a) An all-terrain vehicle may not be operated unless registered pursuant to this chapter or any other section of this title, by the state of Vermont except when operated:

(1) on the property of the owner of the all-terrain vehicle; or

(2) off the highway, in a ski area while being used for the purpose of grooming snow, maintenance or in rescue operations; or

(3) for official use by a federal, state or municipal agency and only if the all-terrain vehicle is identified with the name or seal of the agency in a manner approved by the commissioner; or

(4) solely on privately owned land when the operator is specifically invited to do so by the owner of that property and has on his person the written consent of the owner.

(b) The provisions of section 305 of this title shall apply to a registration, except the registration of a vehicle registered under subsection 3504(b) of this title shall become void on the last day of February next following the date of issue.

(c) The registration of an all-terrain vehicle does not constitute a license to cross or operate an all-terrain vehicle on public or private lands.

(d) An all-terrain vehicle which does not comply with the provisions of this chapter may not be registered by the commissioner.

(e) An all-terrain vehicle owned by a person who is a resident of any other state or province shall be deemed to be properly registered for the purposes of this chapter if it is registered in accordance with the laws of the state or province in which its owner resides, but only to the extent that a similar exemption or privilege is granted under the laws of that state or province for all-terrain vehicles registered in this state by a resident of this state. (Added 1983, No. 240 (Adj. Sess.), § 1; amended 2001, No. 75 (Adj. Sess.), § 11; 2007, No. 76, § 33b.)

While fishing Lake Champlain a few years ago south end,we had a wheeler with 1 man and a auger go through in 50 fow , 12"s of ice just folded up around it and let down that was the last time I had a wheeler on the lake,it was late Feb had been cold good ice all around .Just be careful be ready to bail.BB

Both are safe and sound ,well maybe not sound but safe!! ;D
