Anyone have an ESKIMO 1 MAN QUICK HUT?
« on: Dec 08, 2008, 06:43 PM »
Hi all- I am looking at the Eskimo Quick hut, 1 man shelter. It is the green one.Does anyone here have one or have seen them and their thoughts. We have a 2 man but if I am alone, this looks like it will work good.It says it has a hinged door for the icehole so I am assuming it also has a floor. Thanks in advance.

Pete, I have one. It is kind of narrow and long, with a floor. It has a hinged opening in the floor, and one small window. Also has one Zippered door. I used it for one year so far and everything has held up so far with it. The one thing about it,if you have a pretty good wind you want the narrow end into the wind or you get blown over. It sets up quick and comes down quick. Very light as long as you don't have alot of stuff to haul on it. I use a folding lawn chair in it, to sit on,so then there is not alot of space for gear inside. Overall I like it, but we don't get alot of wind on are lakes in this area. Mine was blown over once ,but I wasn't sitting in it either.Hope this helps you out.

Icecube- thanks for the reply.Just a few more questions if you don't mind. How big is the hole in the floor? What is the floor made out of and when folded,do you drag the hut using its floor? Is there any room inside  with a Buddy heater and a camera and some gear? Was it all assembled when you got it? I assume that by its looks, it uses aluminum poles to hold the fabric up.Are these poles held together by a shockcord like the Chappells or you have to put them together piece by piece loose?Hows it to drag across the ice and snow? Sorry for so many ??? but I have only seen them in an advertise.Does the fabric seem to be good quality? One last ?, does it flap alot in the wind or is the fabric supported pretty good with the frame? Thanks again for your help.By the way I can get one for $130. Pete

Pete, sorry  I did not get back to you till today.  I will try an answer all your questions for you hopefully. The weight of the shanty is 31 lbs, by it self. Base size is 60" by 30".  Height is 65". Hinged hole opening in floor  is 20" by 10". Floor is black plastic, it is kind of on the light side, but OK. You drag it on the black plastic floor. I would not drag it on dry ground a lot ,or you would probably wear a hole in it eventually. Although I think it would take quite a few times. I'm going to build a sled for mine, because I want a sled anyway. It is easy dragging on ice and snow maybe up to 6". Then it starts pushing snow or going under the snow. The poles are held together by bolts and hinges. When you set it up you pull up the top roof poles, and side poles just fold up automatically, because they are connected together. Then you just put your support pole on top between the ends. There is a small brace pole on the bottom you fold out that goes against the plastic bottom, and thats it. It is probably one of the easiest shantys to set up.  Oh yea, there is some assembly required. But believe me it is easy.  The fabric is pretty good material it is not light weight. Fabric  is supported pretty good against the frame.  It doesn't seem to flap in the wind alot, but yes you will get some movement from it depending how hard the wind blows. There is not a lot of room  in it. I put a chair ,myself, buddy heater, jig pole bag, another small bag of junk, and it is pretty full. That is one reason why I'm building a sled.  I am not a big guy either 5' 8" tall. Hope this helps you out, any more questions let me know. I will get back to you as soon as I can.

Pete , one more thing the poles in it are aluminum or some type of metal. They also seem pretty sturdy. And I also have my Vex inside with the other stuff I said I have in it. I can't believe I forgot that!!!!  Probably because I haven't got to fish yet. Stupid weather!!  It is raining here today.

Icecube- Wow thanks alot! I couldnt get that much info out of the salesman!!!!!!!!!! I think for the $230 I will buy it as sometimes I do go alone and usually have the same type of gear you do except for the VEX I use a camera.I was thinking of mounting it on top of 1 of the Jetsleds and all the gear underneath it.Another member did this with a larger hut and it seemed to work out well for him.Where abouts are you from? Iam in WNY around Niagara Falls.Hopefully this crappy weather will go away so the lakes can make some ice.Well thanks alot for the help and will be talking to you later when I get this hut and set it up. Pete

Not to talk you out of that shanty, but I fish alone a lot and picked up an eastman ice cube and absolutely love it....it weighs 28 lbs with the 2 chairs. If i do happen to have another person come there is still room. The only downside to it, it doesnt have a floor, however, I find that i have no issue as long as I keep my heater if its that cold. Last season in temps 20 degrees or above a heater wasnt needed. The only reason i mention it, as you can find them on ebay last seasons model for like $149 shipped. Durability for mine is excellent, this is 2nd season of moderately heavy use and it still looks like new. Also it comes in a bag/bagpack that you can carry on your back.
