i keep smelts alive for up to 2mo. with sure-lifes better bait. its sold in bass pro now. works great and keeps them lively. i swap half my water and change my fiberglass filter once a week and no problems. once a month i empty and bleach the whole tank, rinse well then and add back 1/3rd. of the old water w/ any bait i have left. add 1/2 tsp. of better bait and top off w/ fresh water.
