Anybody have any idea as to when the first smelting camps open up this winter, on average? Thanks

Kinda figured that much. I actually usually go later in the year and was wondering when was the earliest some of you have gone.

I've been in shacks in December in bowdoinham that were floating on 55 gal. drums off a dock right at the bridge on the Cathance.Did pretty good too.

i have gone as early as dec 27th.  we caught over a 1000 of them.  it is always the best time to go.  start calling around x-mas.  as soon as they go on get up there

I agree. Late Dec early Jan has always been best for me. As soon as safe ice has made up...GO!!

Oh yea, hoping to go a least a couple times a week, I ran out of smelts before summer last yr...lol

I've had a shack on the Kennebec before Christmas. That's not going to happen this year. 8)
