Pike on Tip-ups

I would love to do more Pike fishing this winter but was wondering if anybody had any tips on where in the water column to place you bait. Any help would be great.

No expert here, I just would suggest placing your baits at various depths in the water column (including on the bottom).  If you figure out a pattern, move your baits accordingly.  Good luck.

I usaully put mine about 12 to 18 inches off bottom.  In one lake however, the crawdads were swimming up and eating the bait.  I moved my bait up to 24 to 30 inches up.  solved the crawdad problem and still caught fish.

Give a man a fish,  he eats for a day.
Teach a man to fish,  he sits all day on the ice drinking beer.

IC,

Well I guess it depends upon how deep of water you're fishing.   Wow, I bet you were mesmerized by that answer but bear with me here.

One thing about pike is they will come up for a bait a lot further than they will go down for a bait so I typically fish a little higher in the water column than I would for perch or walleye for example.

I usually fish in 4 to 20 FOW but prefer it in the 6 to 12 FOW range and look for weedbeds or other structure.

If I'm fishing 12 FOW, I usually fish about 4 feet off the bottom would be one example.

These are just my opinions, I'm sure some will agree with me and some won't and hope this was some sort of assistance.

FLAG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks guys for all of your help. We have fished a couple of times for pike through the ice and have yet to catch one. Most of the time we put the bait really close to the bottom so this year I will bring it up a little and see what happens.

I've caught them high and low.  I always start them out at about 2' above the tops of the weeds, some tiimes early ice, that is only a couple feet under the ice.  I move them up and down from there.  Since we only get two line over here in the Western district, I usually set one up static and jig or hold one and watch on the "Fish Porn O Scope"  :)    Once I get on on i tend to move all my lines to that depth and catch more!

Pike through the ice is alot of fun and the first time you see that mouth come up that hole....Its Awesome!!!

pike can see underneath themselves, not as good as they can from the sides or above, but they can see under themselves....their eyes aren't in a fixed position, they can move like our eyes can

Next time you catch one...turn it over...if you can't see the eyes it cant see you...

A pikes eyes don't extend beyond its "cheeks".  They can't see anything Directly Below them, I don't know to what degree but their belly is their blind spot, that is why it is white, so that larger pike have a harder time seeing them from underneath...

it would be physically impossible, do to their shape, to be able to see directly under their belly, to do this they would have to look backwards at a downward angle. but they do have a slight cone of vision "under their nose" so to speak. hope this clarifies what i said before.
